都道府県を英訳してみよう

都道府県名にはいろいろな漢字が用いられている。
また、旧国名にもいろいろな漢字が用いられている。

地名なので必ずしも意味のあるものではないが、
そこから無理やりにでも意味を拾い上げて英語にしてみたいと思う。

今回は都道府県。


1. 北海道 → System of the North Sea.

北海はそのまま。
道はroadやwayとしたくなるが、道には道路のほか、法則や制度、統治するという意味もある。
そこで、制度と読み替えてsystemと訳してみた。


2. 青森県 → County of the Blue Forest.

青森はそのまま。
県もそのままcountyにあてた。


3. 岩手県 → County of the Rockside.

岩はそのまま。
手は手足の手ではなく、かみてしもての手とした。


4. 秋田県 → County of Harvesting Rice Fields.

田はそのまま。
秋田 = 収穫期の田と読み替えて。


5. 宮城県 → County of the Imperial Fortress.

宮を転じて、帝国に。
城はそのまま。
かつて対蝦夷戦線の前線基地であったという歴史に思いをはせつつ。


6. 山形県 → County of the Mountain Shadows.

山の形。山の影。


7. 福島県 → County of the Fortunate Island.

福の島というところをどうすべきか迷ったが、
幸運をもたらすと解釈して。


8. 茨城県 → County of Castle Thorn.

イバラ城という固有名詞あるいは愛称と解釈して。


9. 栃木県 → County of the Buckeye Woods.

木が1本というのは少し違和感があるので、
トチノキの森を想定して。


10. 群馬県 → County of Horse Farms.

馬の群れ。あるいは群れる馬。
野生でもよいが、軍馬や農耕馬を飼う牧場を想定して。


11. 千葉県 → County of Thousands of Leaves.

幾千枚もの葉の土地。


12. 埼玉県 → County of the Edge of Mt. Jade.

埼には岬の意味もあるが、山の突端という意味もある。
玉山の突端という解釈で。


13. 東京都 → Metropolis of the East Capital.

そのまま。


14. 神奈川県 → County of the Divine Apple.

奈は主に疑問詞として用いるが、紅林檎という意味もあるらしい。
神奈でつまり神の林檎としてみた。
イズンの管理する黄金の林檎だろうか。


15. 静岡県 → County of the Silent Hills.

サイレントヒル⇔静岡はよくあるネタ。
それに便乗。
ただし複数形にしてみた。


16. 愛知県 → County of Philosophy.

知を愛するで哲学。
ソークラテースみたいだな。


17. 三重県 → County of the Three-folded.

三枚重ねにされた土地。


18. 山梨県 → County of Mountain Pears.

そのまま。
そして実際、梨が穫れる。


19. 長野県 → County of Narrow Basins.

長い野ってなんだろうなと想像して、山間の狭くて細長い盆地かと解いてみた。


20. 岐阜県 → County of the Bifurcating Downs.

岐阜の名の由来とされる岐山と曲阜とに因むのではなく、
分岐する丘とした。


21. 新潟県 → County of the New Lagoon.

新しくできたラグーンの国。


22. 富山県 → County of the Mountain of Wealth.

富の山の県。そのまま。


23. 石川県 → County of the Stone River.

これもそのまま石の川。


24. 福井県 → County of the Fortune Well.

そんな井戸あったっけ？


25. 滋賀県 → County of Increasing Pleasure.

滋 = ますます
賀 = よろこぶ
で、ますますよろこぶ県。


26. 京都府 → Centre of the Urban Capital.

府は中心地とした。
京, 都はほぼ同じ意味なので、しつこく。


27. 奈良県 → County of "What is good?"

今度は奈を疑問符で使ってみた。
漢文的に。


28. 大阪府 → Centre of the Great Slope.

でっかい坂。


29. 和歌山県 → County of the Centre of the Japanese poetry.

山を総本山的な意味で使って、和歌の聖地の県。


30. 兵庫県 → County of the Armoury.

武器庫の県。


31. 岡山県 → County of the Hills and Mountains.

そのまま。


32. 広島県 → County of the Large Archipelago.

島が広いというより、島々の浮かぶ海が広い感じ。
ただし、実際の広島の海はあまり広くはない、と思う。


33. 山口県 → County of the Mountain Entrance.

山の口。


34. 鳥取県 → County of Taking Birds.

鳥を取るのか、猛禽類の如く狩猟をする鳥なのかはご想像に任せます。


35. 島根県 → County of the Root of the Islands.

島の根っこ。そのまま。


36. 徳島県 → Coounty of the Virtuous Islands.

徳の高い島。あるいは島々。


37. 香川県 → County of the Flavourous River.

香る川。


38. 高知県 → County of the Genius.

高い知性の県。つまり天才の県。


39. 愛媛県 → County of the Adorable Princess.

愛らしい姫の県。


40. 福岡県 → County of the Fortunate Downs.

福島県と同様。
ひねりなし。


41. 大分県 → County of the Great Parting.

すごい分岐点の県。


42. 佐賀県 → County of Helping Pleasure.

佐 = たすける
賀 = よろこび
で、よろこびをたすける。


43. 長崎県 → County of the Long Cape.

長い岬の県。
長い外套の県とも読める。


44. 宮崎県 → County of the Imperial Cape.

宮は宮城と同様に。
崎はそのまま。


45. 熊本県 → County of the Origin of the Bears.

熊の起源の県。


46. 鹿児島県 → County of the Island of Deer Pups.

鹿の子供の島の県。


47. 沖縄県 → County of the Rope in the Offing.

沖にある縄の県。
