NGO,Peace Action

--------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, August 6 will mark the 60th anniversary of when we dropped a nuclear bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Many, many people died. Those who were close to the blast were incinerated by the heat and left shadows on the sidewalks, walls and streets where they stood. To draw attention to this anniversary and the destructive power of nuclear weapons (the senate just approved a bunch of money to develop new nuclear weapons in addition to upgrading the 10,000 or so we already have - each far more powerful than what was dropped in Japan), we will be drawing chalk outlines of bodies on sidewalks in NYC with the words, Hiroshima 1945, New York 2005 and a web address explaining what this is below.

------------------------------------------------------------

Friday, July 29, 6:30 pm, Union Square, NE corner

Saturday, July 30, 10:00 am, Central Park Bandshell

---------------------------------------------------------------
A nice person from the National Lawyers Guild e-mailed me to tell me that marking on the street with chalk is illegal and can result in a misdemeanor (even hopscotch isn't safe anymore). Another nice person from the New York Civil Liberties Union is currently negotiating with the police to allow us to do our project without fear of arrest in a highly trafficked commercial area of Manhattan (the NYCLU person suggested Times Square). He has not heard back from the police yet but it seems like it will be fine and we can continue as planned although we won't know where to do this until we hear back from the police.

Please try to attend one of the training sessions we have set up. If there isn't a training session in your area I will be thrilled to help you set one up.

IN THE MEAN TIME, you can help out by collecting large pieces of sturdy cardboard that we will use to cut out body forms from. If you have the time, the cardboard and a box cutter, it would be great if you could start making body cutouts on your own!

Again, please forward this to people you know who would be interested in helping. The shadow project flyer is on our under construction website at www.panys.org
