19時からRoyalOakにて、オックスフォード在住の学部生・院生・
スタッフなどを向けにゆったりしたパブナイトを企画しております。
毎年「postgrad freshers' drinks」として行われてきた行事ですが、
今回は若干拡大した形で開催することにしました。新入生も以前から
いらっしゃる方も皆ヴェルカムです。是非ご参加ください〜

Japanese Pub Night at the Royal Oak -
October 16th - 19:00 onwards (...plus a NEET clip as a bonus!)


Dear new and old friends living in Oxford,

Greetings to you all from Green Templeton College which is going
through a slightly chaotic period following the marriage of the two
previously independent colleges. As some of you may know, I have
just returned to Oxford around a week ago after 1,5 years of
fieldwork in Japan, and sooner than I could say 'bop' was I handed the
exciting task of organising this year's postgraduate freshers' drinks
(Kei from Wolfson has organised the event over the past few
years but shall henceforth be acting as the Honourary Secretary).
Except that this year, Kei, Chikako and I decided that it would be a
good idea to strive to overcome all possible barriers and would thus
like to warmly extend the invitation to undergraduates and staff at both
O.U. and Oxford Brookes in addition to the usual postgrads. We also
welcome guests to bring friends who are from neither of the mighty
institutions but are studying elsewhere, working or 'NEET' in Oxford
(if you've managed to avoid this term so far, the below clip will explain
what it refers to!).

Basically, what we have in mind is a highly informal evening at
the Royal Oak on Thursday the 16th of October from 19:00 to
around 22:00 (the Royal Oak is located on Woodstock Road,
just across the road from Green Templeton and a five or ten
minutes' walk up the road from the Ashmolean on St. Giles -
that turns into Woodstock Road after the first 500 meters).
We expect slightly more than the usual 10-15 participants this
time and have reserved two tables which are in the left wing of
the pub.

In the past, we've mostly had Japanese students from various disciplines, Japanese-speakers and 'Japanologists' take part, but anyone from
any discipline who is interested in chatting with us is free to come
along this year. It should turn out not only an entertaining evening
but also a unique chance to make friends across the undergraduate-
postgrad-staff/Oxford-Oxford Brookes divides and to get to know the
'Japan community' in Oxford better.

I'd be grateful if you could forward this invitation to anyone you think might be interested, including freshers as well as more experienced Oxford dwellers.

追伸　Oh, I almost forgot to include the promised bonus video.
Here it is in any case: a hilarious but at the same time informative
clip of 'Bakushou mondai' (an 'educational' type of o-warai bangumi)
with Honda Yuki --- one of the more spirited scholars I interviewed
during my fieldwork on 'youth independence policy' in Japan ---
explaining her views on 'NEETs' and why youth have been turned into
