報告要旨:
I will discuss the relationship between multilingualism and language
vitality by focusing on the African continent. Various scenarios of
language shift and different kinds of multilingualism will be looked at.
Language repertoires vary significantly between different communities and
also among the individual community members. Quite a number of scholars
regard societal multilingualism as one of the indicators for language
endangerment. The relation between multilingualism and language
endangerment, however, is much more complex, and on the long run, minority
language will only survive, if stable language use patterns can be
established.

多言語使用と言語の活力との関係をアフリカ大陸に焦点をあてて論じる。言語の取り替え (language shift) が起こる様々な過程と，多言語使用の多様なあり方について考えたい。どのような言語が関わってくるかは，コミュニティごとに異なるだけでなく，同じコミュニティの成員の間でも異なる。社会のレベルでおこる多言語使用を，言語の消滅の危機を表す指標のひとつと考える研究者は多い。だが，多言語使用と言語の消滅の危機との間の関係はもっと複雑であり，長期的にみると，少数言語が存続するのは，言語使用のパタンが安定したときに限られる。
