A free public lecture hosted by the School of Historical Studies, University of Melbourne
Speaker: Graham Willett When: 6:30, Thursday September 13 Where: Laby Lecture Theatre, Physics Building, University of Melbourne (Swanston Street)
We often think of queer Melbourne as something recent. Not so. This city has a rich homosexual history going back to the sodomites incarcerated in the prison-hulks in the 1840s. But it is not all dusty old archives (not that there's anything wrong with that!). Tonight's lecture recalls and celebrates the secret ャ and the public ャ life of camp/gay/queer Melbourne. From Val's coffee shop to the Melbourne Uni queer room; from the Arts Balls to Red Raw; from the parks after dark to ・well, some traditions endure. Stories, viewpoints, recollections (some even true!), highlighting the presence and perseverance of Our Crowd.
Graham Willett lectures in Australian Studies at Melbourne University. He is the author of Living Out Loud: A History of Gay and Lesbian Activism in Australia and President of the Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives
