Located on the northeast corner of the Seattle University campus that once was the site of a Japanese-American community, the Japanese American Remembrance Garden will serve as a living memorial to Japanese Americans who were forced to live in internment camps during World War II.

The garden, designed by Allan Kubota, will be celebrated in a dedication ceremony, 4:30 to 6 p.m. April 6 at the garden site, located next to the School of Theology and Ministry’s Hunthausen Hall and the Chapel of St. Ignatius. A program and reception will follow in McGoldrick Commons in Hunthausen Hall.

“For the Japanese community, this garden is very special because it marks the area as sacred land in honor of the Japanese who lived here and were unjustly forced into internment camps during World War II,” said Larry Matsuda, visiting professor in the College of Education and committee chairman of the Japanese American Remembrance Garden. “The garden is an example of Seattle University living out its social justice mission by reminding us to never let this type of injustice happen again.”

Under President Franklin Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066, approximately 120,000 Japanese and Japanese Americans, 62 percent of whom were U.S. citizens, were sent to “relocation centers” and lived in overcrowded and poor conditions. The Executive Order was signed in 1942 and was rescinded by Roosevelt in 1944.

Seattle University established the garden as a special area for healing, reflection and inspiration. It also celebrates the legacy of Fujitaro Kubota, a Japanese immigrant who immigrated to the United States in 1907 and was interned at Camp Minidoka in Idaho. After the war, Kubota designed nine gardens at Seattle University. His grandson, Allan Kubota, is the master landscaper of the Japanese American Remembrance Garden, the tenth Kubota garden on campus. The garden features plants, trees and rocks, all carefully positioned to create balance and simplicity that are distinctive of Japanese gardens.

The community is invited to attend the dedication ceremony and reception. RSVP by March 31 via e-mail at AlumniRSVP@seattleu.edu or call (206) 296-6127.
