This plant covered with straws is a cycad.
Cycads is tropical plant.
So it is covered to protect from the cold.
Kyoto is hot in summer but cold in winter because Kyoto is basin.
So this cycad becomes like this.
This cycad was gifted by one daimyo (a Japanese feudal lord) when the Nijo castle is made.
Regrettably it is not sure that the cycad at that time is this.
But the age of this cycad is more than 130 years old at least.
