“Comrade Pedersen”, directed by Hans Petter Moland, is the story of the intelligent but socially insecure Norwegian high school teacher Knut Pedersen and his involvement with the small but highly influential revolutionary Marxist-Leninist party AKP-ML. Even though he generally sees himself as being too critical by nature to be swept away by the revolutionary fervour that dominated some of the major academic institutions in Norway in the 1970s, he is nevertheless incapable of resisting the charms of the charismatic and beautiful local chairman of the party, the medical doctor Linda Skåtøy. He proceeds to infiltrate an organization he secretly feels an aversion to, hoping to get close to Linda, but nothing seems to work out the way he wants. The movie is based on Dag Solstad’s controversial novel of the same name, and was a great success at Norwegian cinemas when it was released this spring.
