Wölffer Estate Vineyard An American Winery in the Classic European Tradition Founded in 1987 and owned by Hamburg-born Christian Wölffer, Wölffer Estate Vineyard, a 55-acre winery located between Southampton to the west and Easthampton to the east, is at once an American winery but with a decidedly European character, both in its spirit and its wines. Through the vision of Christian Wölffer and the meticulous care of his professional team, these former potato fields have become the foundation for world-class wines. The winery currently produces 13,500 cases annually.
Under winemaker and general manager Roman Roth's meticulous care, Wölffer Estate wines embody the region as well as a classical style of winemaking, with a rich concentration of fruit and lively acidity born of the unique terroir of these Sagaponack vineyards, similar in some respects to conditions in Bordeaux.
The German-born Roth, together with his American vineyard manager, Richard Pisacano, spare no effort or expense in tending to the vineyards and grape production, all to exploit the full potential of the terroir and microclimate, which is constantly bathed in cooler breezes from the Atlantic, only 2.6 miles away. It is this winning combination of climate and soil that ensures the ripeness and acidity necessary for producing elegant wines.
At first sight, the multimillion-dollar, 12,000-square-foot winery, completed in 1997, transports one to some enchanted Old World locale, quite removed from the Hamptons. The architecture is Tuscan in style, with exterior walls of sun-bleached ocher and casement windows framed with shutters in a vibrant Provencal blue. Conifers dapple the landscape. Junipers and hemlocks carpet the grounds. A circular, coin-filled fountain greets visitors just below the massive, wooden front doors.
Inside, on the main level, is a high-ceilinged tasting room and museum, which inspires visions of a grand hall, supported by 100-year-old rough-hewn beams from North Carolina and solid terra-cotta tile covering the floors. Sets of tall French doors open onto the vineyards. On the north side of the main level is a private meeting and party room, with its own kitchen. Dominating the room is an antique stained-glass window imported from Germany.
On the lower level, the state-of-the-art winemaking facility is equipped with massive, computerized stainless-steel tanks, a laboratory, riddling rooms, a bottling line, and a cellar to hold the wines before distribution. In keeping with the European tradition, the barrel rooms are constructed of high-vaulted caves. Here wines are aged in imported French oak barrels.
Tour guide at Billy Joel signed barrel! Wölffer Estate Vineyard has been visited by numerous celebrities. Many of which have been asked to sign the ends of wine barrels in the cellar. Our tour will have a chance to view these famous signed barrels. Website: http://www.wolffer.com
Duck Walk Vineyards: Dr.Herodotus "Dan" Damianos and his son, Alexander, founded duck Walk Vineyards in 1994. The Normandy Chateau-style building in Water Mill, a true Hamptons landmark, became home to what has quickly evolved into one of the most well known names in quality Long Island wines.
Today, Duck Walk produces more than 25,000 cases of wine from 130 acres of vineyards and has been repeatedly recognized for excellence in national competitions.
Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard During the 1980's, Sam Rubin ventured to eastern Long Island and acquired what has since become the beautiful Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard ("BHFV"). Sam, a lifelong farmer and naturalist, began to till the soil, the basis for all great wines, using only organic compost and other natural ingredients. This approach, the acquisition of fine French vines, the rather hospitable climate of the region, along with his vision and hard work, remain the foundation for BHFV's rather exceptional wine.
Southampton Public House Frommers says, "This bustling pub is the only microbrewery out here and is worth coming to for a meal or just for the party that rages continuously."
