THE SPIRIT OF ENGLISH IN JAPAN (要綱案)
The task of language in our human evolution and the particular characteristics of English will be the context in which this course offers the opportunity to meet and engage with the work of Rudolf Steiner.
In the history of England and of the English language, and in the development of the literature we find many themes that exemplify what Rudolf Steiner describes in the evolution of our consciousness. In this course we will study English in a practical and communicative way as well as developing an approach to the great Logos themes through the living grammar of the language. Shakespeare, Blake, the Romantic Poets, and Eliot will provide rich literary examples of how poetry heralds our destiny, and the culture of our modern age will give us the chance to discern the challenges of this present Michaelic time. We will also consider what it means to celebrate the festivals of the year as an aspect of the Logos, and what the destiny is of English as a world language.（Andrew Wolpert）

日本にいたころの私は、シュタイナーといえば’’シュタイナ
ー教育’しか耳にしたことがなく、エマソンカレッジ（ヨーロ
ッパ）に来たことでその背後にある根本思想である’人智学’
を知ることになりました。ヴァドルフ教育はこの人智学（真の
人間とはにか？）という思想なくしてはありえない教育です。
そして、私と人智学との’出会い’は、アンドリュー先生なく
しては、考えられません。このエマソンでの５年間、彼の一年
間のコースのみならず、カレッジ共同体にオープンになってい
た彼の講義にはほぼすべてかかさず参加していました。今まで
あまり興味のなかった、キリスト論、シェイクスピア、ルネッ
サンスアート、語学論などに対して、なぜ私はこんなにも魅せ
られていたのでしょうか？それは、いわゆる一般常識や知識に
たいする興味ではなく、全ての内容に、真の人間像とは何か？
という’人智学的視点’を感じとることができたからであり、
しかもそれがシュタイナーの言葉をオウム返しされたものでは
なく、アンドリュー自身の言葉で語られているということが、
私にははっきりと感じられたためでした。そしてそれらを惜し
みなく人々とシェアし続ける彼の’現在進行形’の行為は、ま
さに’人間’的な、情熱と愛情そのものです。アンドリューが
エマソンカレッジをやめられるのは、私にとって大変悲しいこ
とですが、見方を変えれば、もっと勉強したいが、留学出来な
い状況にある、日本の多くのシュタイナーの活動をされている
方々に、ここに書いたことを今回のような長期で、人智学にま
っすぐ焦点をあてたコース（エマソンでは英語強化コースの色
も濃かったので）で体験してもらえる、またとない機会になる
かもしれません。今回のwonderさんの日本でのフルタイムコース
発足へ向けての情熱と行動力に熱いエールを送りたいと思いま

私がエマソンで、そしてエマソンを卒業
して今も大変お世話になっているアンドリュー先生が、日本で（たぶんこれが最初で最後になる）コースを開催するのに
少しでも貢献ができたらと思って今メールを書いています。
フルタイムでも参加は難しいかもしれませんが、パートタイムや一回の講義などもあるので、是非この機会にアンドリュー先生にひとりでも多くの人が会うことができたらと心から祈っています。
シュタイナーのアントロポゾフィー（人智学）をアンドリュー先生自身が体験したことを通して話してくれるので、
単に本を頭だけで、読むのとは違った迫力があります。
アントロポゾフィーの本を読んでいる人はたくさんいますが、なかなかアントロポゾフィーを生活に浸透することが
できる人は少ないと思います。よく私が聞くのは、シュタイナーが本でいっていることは納得できるけど、実際にシュタイナーを勉強している人に会ってから、人智学に対して疑問を持つ人が多くいるということです。これは、未来の哲学であるシュタイナーの実践がいかに難しいかをあらわしていると私は思います。そんななかで、アンドリュー先生は数少ない、人智学を生きている人の一人だと私は、自信をもって
いうことができます。
一人でも多くの人がアンドリュー先生の生き様を体験し、彼の独特のユーモアを楽しんでくれることを祈っています。
