Photo contest for HM's 62nd Birthday Celebrations

INTERNATIONAL photojournalist, representing print media from different parts of the world are welcome to come to Brunei to take photographs during His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's 62nd Birthday Celebrations on July 15.

The Brunei Times, one of the country's two English-language newspapers, is working together with the Department of Information of the Prime Minister's office to commemorate the occasion.

The objective of the initiative is to showcase to the world the 62nd Birthday Celebrations that is organised by His Majesty the Sultan's loyal subjects and also to display Brunei Darussalam's cultural heritage, its people, its respect for the environment and efforts to conserve natural resources.

The invited photojournalists are expected to publish their photo essays, that will be based on the four selected themes of: Celebrations, People, Cultural Heritage and the Environment, in the newspapers or magazines they represent.

This must be done no later than September 15, 2008 so that their published photo essays are eligible to compete for the best Photo Essay Award in addition to the top three prizes of US$3,000 for the first prize, US$2,000 for the second prize and US$1,000 for the third.

At the same time, The Brunei Times is also organising a photogenic competition for all Bruneians and those residing or visiting in Brunei Darussalam, including the invited photojournalists, and once again based on the four themes stated above.

The top three prizes for the photogenic competition will be US$1,500 for first prize, US$1,000 for second prize and US$500 for third prize.

The Best Photography Award will go to the overall best entry to be chosen from the four first prize winners.

In addition, there will be a Special Award for the best entry submitted by students of secondary schools and tertiary institutions.

Selected images from the competition will be featured in a commemorative book for this auspicious event where its contents will contain rich visual images and convey the bond between His Majesty and his loyal subjects.

The book will also be presented as a gift to His Majesty.

This competition is supported by the Brunei Photographic Society and the Brunei Darussalam Association of Photographers.
