English as an International Language:
Standards in the Teaching of Grammar and Pragmatics Sandra Lee McKay
(San Francisco State University)
-Abstract-

The purpose of this presentation is to describe the features of English as an international language and to highlight issues that arise in the teaching of grammatical and pragmatic standards in reference English as an international language (EIL). The paper will begin with a discussion of the characteristics of EIL, the reasons for its spread, and the many varieties of English that presently exist. The author will maintain that the teaching of an international language raises unique issues regarding standards in language classrooms. The second part of the presentation will describe how the spread of English has resulted in changes in grammatical standards in countries where English has an official role. The presenter will illustrate common grammatical innovations that exist in countries where English has an official role, such as in Singapore. She will also discuss what criteria are commonly used to assess when an innovation becomes accepted as standard. Finally, based on data from the Singaporean context, she exemplifies how what is accepted as standard can differ according to ethnic background and social class. The final section of the paper addresses the topic of cross-cultural pragmatics in the use of EIL. After discussing some of the central tenets of pragmatics, the presenter discusses the type of social interactions that can result in cross-cultural misunderstandings. She argues that pragmatics is closely related to issues of personal identity and that cross-cultural misunderstandings are more likely to occur among more proficient speakers of English. In closing she suggests some principles that should inform the teaching of EIL pragmatic and grammatical standards.
