1) What message is Japan trying to convey about itself through the use of cultural "Soft Power?" Do you think this message is working in the terms of Japanese interests? Why or why not?
2) Some people criticize soft power as being TOO soft to be of use as an agent of change. Thinking from that point of view, is it time for Japan to concentrate on Hard Power, such as military and defensive/security capabilities? Whether you feel that way or not, please think of reasons why or why not.
3) Finally, "Japan passing" is viewed by many as a negative thing. However, might there by some positive effects? If so, what are they? To put it another way: Is it really necessary for Japan to have a prominent role on the world stage? Why or why not?
