Arts Public Lecture 'Stem Cell: Letting go of the fantasy'
Join Professor Rae Frances, Dean of Arts, at the 8th Monash Arts Public Lecture with Professor Barbara Katz Rothman, Professor of Sociology at the City University of New York and Visiting Fellow, Sociology, School of Political and Social Inquiry, Faculty of Arts, Monash University.
In this lecture, internationally acclaimed Professor of Sociology Barbara Katz Rothman will critically examine some of the arguments made about stem cell science and treatments. She will examine some of the implications for different groups in society, such as women who are increasingly encouraged to sell embryos for research. And, while stem cell research is presented as a new hope for a host of conditions, is it following the path of a 'search for a cure' or the search for a market? When is a problem one of ethics and when is it one of justice?
