ファンキー＆メロウなグルーヴを繰り出すヴィブラフォン奏者、ロイ・エアーズ。そのロイが立ち上げた音楽集団「ユビクィティー」にかつて参加していたキーボード奏者、フィリップ・ウーがロイと夢の再会を果たす！'40年、L.A.生まれのロイ・エアーズは、ライオネル・ハンプトンに憧れてヴィブラフォンを手にし、'64年からジャズ界で活躍。 '70年代以降はソウルやファンクに接近したヒップなジャズ・ファンク作品を多数残し、現在もヒップホップ／R&B方面から再評価を受けながら活動中だ。一方、今年8月に当クラブで公演を行ったフィリップ・ウーは、 '56年シアトル生まれのアジア系鍵盤奏者。ロイ・エアーズに見出され、ユビクィティーのキーボーディストとして加入し、同グループの黄金時代の名作、「Everybody Loves The Sunshine」、「Searchin'」をプレイした！ その後、アシュフォード＆シンプソン、メイズのライヴ・バンドにも参加。'70年代からソウル／R&Bの名作に参加し、日本在住の現在は国内アーティストの作品にも関わっている。
ふたりのコラボレイションは、近年、英BBEから発表されたロイの'70〜'80年代の未発表音源集『Virgin Ubiquity (I&II）』にも収録。今回の公演ではロビー・ダンジー（元クリストル）を女声シンガーに迎え、あの「ユビクィティー」を再編。Fishsika, Red Black and Green, Coffey, Mystic Voyage, Searching, The Third Eye, Everybody Loves The Sunshineといったユビクィティーの名作や裏の名作と、マーヴィン・ゲイのSave The Childrenをプレイする予定！

My good friend, comrade in musical arms, legendary keyboardist, who lives and resides in Tokyo, Philip Woo is going to perform with his old boss, Roy Ayers, this Sun & Mon at the Cotton Club with his band. Not too sure if you know but Philip Woo was discovered by Roy Ayers in his early 20s and was asked to join Ubiquity and was in the group for a few years, playing keys live and for the jazz-funk, club classics such as Everybody Loves The Sunshine, Searchin', amongst others. Philip Woo went on to plays keys for Ashford & Simpson and for many years, Frankie Beverly & Maze as well.
Roy Ayers played his hit songs at his residency at the Blue Note this week with his band and Lonnie Liston Smith but for this special live performance, his band with feature his mentor, Roy Ayers and perform such favourites of Ubiquity songs such as Fishsika, Red Black and Green, Coffey, Mystic Voyage, Searching, The Third Eye, Everybody Loves The Sunshine, as well as do a cover of Marvin Gaye's classic, Save The Children. So, it is not to be missed!
Let me tell you somethin', Philip's band is a rockin' band regularly performing everywhere and with the legendary Roy Ayer's playing the vibes and singing with them, a hard core music lover like yourself, will no doubt enjoy this magical pow wow!
