Do politicians and the media use and sensationalise the security threat to win popularity and sell stories?

There has been much speculation about the source of leaked information in the high profile raids in Birmingham. The police have suggested it is the government who are spinning.

Following the increased security concerns in Britain since July 2005, there has been a spotlight fixed upon the Muslim Community and its Islamic beliefs. Anti-terror policies supposed to calm public concerns, instead seem to heighten them.

Jack Straw's veil comments, John Reid asking Muslim parents to spy on their children, Blair's speeches on integration and the War on Terror, or Cameron equating Muslims who want Shariah with the BNP - politicians are using a populist rhetoric which heightens mistrust and alienation. Media coverage does little to dispel myths, instead focussing upon matters that further polarises communities ・with much reporting being misleading or exaggerated.

In this public meeting Muslim and Non-Muslim speakers will address a community audience with their own views on the questions of why this climate has emerged and how the Muslim community can respond. Later there will be an open floor discussion.
