KN:
Welcome to our department Mr. Zuntoh. We are so honor to invite you. And today we are ….you are directly conversation. At first come to it..
Peter Zuntoh(PZ):
Thank you for the invitation. This afternoon at five... five o’clock I give a lecture, somewhere in Tokyo, which is three buildings and five projects. And there I will talk about my work with slide… You’ll see photographs. Now, I’m here if you want to talk… we can talk. We can talk about architecture but ah… anything else: philosophy, literature, I also like to contemporary music. Ah…OK. As a introduction, I introduce myself to you. OK. I have a really small firm in Switzerland in the mountains. I decided that should be not more than twenty people. So we are always fifteen, sixteen, eighteen or ??? of people. They come a little bit from all over the world, but they should be that German, our language, is basic office language, which it ???? Italian or French This has to do with the making because my office ???? making projects but executing projects. So we do ??ing drawings, and then we make construction, supervision and we do ???. This is ???. This work is twenty people why? This is because I produce originals. So I have to be there. Without Zuntoh, no Zuntoh’s. No Zuntoh buildings. This is maximum I can control. We can work twenty people, we can work on this things and discuss ???? …and then that’s it. So I cannot take on too much work either. When I was young I took ???? every little commission now I’m a little bit order and now every want to know why I can say ‘No’. When do I say ‘No’? I say no when it’s commercial because I’m not interested, how do you say, I’m not money driven. I mean money is beautiful. I like money… But when I do architecture I’m a passionate architect. So it’s not about money making, it’s about making good architecture of course. So if I can feel that this is a commercial project… I say. If so if I feel now, in these days, that somebody wants to nail of ???. Because you know that you make it good project to us you can imagine. I have to work with the client for two, seven, nine, ten years. We have to develop the project together, we have to overcome bureaucracy and so on and so on… There is always maybe fifty percent of the building standard and maybe fifty percent of not standard.
So ???? as you know, no standard things. They use incredible amount of insistence, persistence. You have to trust in yourself and you need a client who believes in you. The client has to go with you and undergo the trouble. six or seven years maybe the best client says to me ‘No, Mr.Zumthor, now this is getting too much! Please stop, we can not do this column bar, ceilings be invented mortar concrete made out of mortar then ???? it doesn’t work give up. We didn’t give up, now they’re bear they’re smiling again, so I mean that smile I need the client who likes architecture, who likes to ???? for the product. We are delivery. This is basic if the client only wants to name it doesn’t work(Peter Zumthor?). Because there comes first problem he will go off. He will think them ???? collapse. There, of course as he know, the world people ???? can buy architecture like a painting, or like a stereo set in the shop and bring it home with there. But with me it’s process. That’s when… that’s about the office and how we work, I depend a lot on good engineers and craftsman unfortunately we have to collect most of the time and ??? because where in client, Germany ??? Austria now we are building in Norway. So we are always have to collect these guys ???? talk with them engineers, most for craftsman who do the wood work or the concrete work or the metal work. ???? end of the year when the buildings finish craftsman often ??? say, ‘Now too bad we have to say goodbye, now we know how to work together.
