Much of what we communicate, particularly about our emotions and our relationships, is communicated nonverbally, that is, without words. In spite of the importance of nonverbal communication, we are not often consciously aware of it. In this presentation, I will discuss different types of nonverbal communication, how they are used, and how they are related to verbal communication.

Kathleen Kitao teaches communication theory and English language at Doshisha Women’s College. Her research interests include corpus linguistics, vocabulary acquisition, interpersonal communication, and Internet friendships. She has co-authored about 50 communication and English language and has published two collections of papers. Her other interests include travel, musicals, and history,
