The Hunted
In dating, why do men love a challenge?
By Josey Vogels
Dear Josey
My gal pals and I have a motto about men: Treat them mean, keep them keen. Ok, so we're not mean exactly, but guys do seem to love the challenge of the hunt, and if we ladies give in too easily, too soon, they're turned off. Why is this so? And why do men lose interest once they "win" the game?
The Hunted?
Dear Hunted,
Maybe it all goes back to the days when men went off to hunt wooly Mammoths while the gals hung back and took care of things at the cave. Or maybe its because the male of the species was biologically programmed to spread his seed as far as possible with as many mates as possible causing them to go through women like potato chips. But none of this would explain why women are exactly the same. And you know they are. How else do you explain all the letters I get from men who complain that women only go out with jerks who treat them like crap while the nice guys get burned. I think as humans, we love a challenge. We are attracted to confidence and a little indifference. It calms our fears that the person isn't going to suck the life out of us with their neediness. It also gives us something to fight for. If relationships were easy, we'd all quickly get bored and go off and jump out of planes or something. We need the challenge to stay interested in the game. I mean think about it, when's the last time you lustily pursued a man who presented himself on a silver platter to you. We don't like them to give in too easily either do we? Makes us wonder what's wrong with them. Ideally, we all want balance. We want to be with someone who is confident and has a strong sense of themselves yet still has the capacity to love and give to a relationship. That way it’s still a challenge but no one has to "win."
