Exhibition 『Asia Art Now』, hosted by The Korean People's Artists Association, has been working to widen various spectrums of artistic practice with contemporary Asia artists whose works devote on summarizing the current issues, starting from the 2002『21st Century & The People of Asia』exhibition. The theme of 『2006 Asia Art Now』exhibition, 'Globalization & Locality' is popular among all sorts of fields like politics, economics, society and culture, as it is one of the highly acknowledged ! topic of the current century.
Through this exhibition, we seek to study the 'Implication of Asia's Globalization and Locality'. That is to seek the significance of artistic reflection of 'Asia's locality' as a response strategy on globalization which is accelerated by the indiscriminate power relations. Moving a step further, we will be able to bring out political implications on converting the local discourse of 'a negative campaign' on globalization into that of 'a positive campaign'.
『2006 Asia Art Now』 seeks to illuminate the arts and artists who have monitored locality in various perceptions and also the results aimed on artistic practices in a specific local life. Rather than presenting a new model on globalization and locality, we present 'Local conception and local practice' as a strategy or attitude of artistic practice, thereby including diverse trends from critical realism to activism based on a premise of participation and intervention.
By revealing the problematic issues this exhibition holds, we hope it will create an 'open discussion' on what meaning current art brings to our society and what we can do.
