The Origins of Interactive Art"
Erkki Huhtamo(UCLA芸術学部教授 Finland/US)19:40-21:00 36号館2F演劇映像実習室

This lecture will explore the origins of interactive art. Although usually considered a form of digital art, the roots of interactive art go further back in time to the classic avant-gardes of the early 20th century. Early key figures were Marcel Duchamp and Frederick Kiesler, but many others also contributed, including creators of visual music and kinetic art, as well as radical artists like Yves Klein, John Cage, Yoko Ono, Valie Export and Nam June Paik, to mention just a few. The contributions of these and other artists will be discussed and related to later developments of interactive art.

「文化のインタフェース:西欧偏重メディア史観への反論」 "Intercultural Interfaces: Against the pro-Western Bias of Media History" Erkki Huhtamo(UCLA芸術学部教授 Finland/US)

Most media histories have been written from a Euro-American perspective: the rest of the world is usually pictured as passive recipients of innovations that have originated in the West, reflecting ideas of ideological and economic domination. Media archaeology and visual anthropology, among other approaches, help us question such a dangerously simplistic idea by pointing out neglected traditions, undetected influences and parallels between seemingly ‘independent’ media. By focusing on traditions of visual storytelling and media machines like the “peep-show”, found from many parts of the world, this lecture proposes a new model for media history, where intercultural exchanges and multi-directional trajectories of influence play a central role.
