Abstract:
Rakugo is a traditional Japanese story telling but it has some
connections with some stories in the West. I would like to touch upon
the brief history of rakugo first, focusing on its relations with
western stories. Then I would like to refer to how English rakugo was
started by the late Katsura Shijaku in the early 1980s and how I
started to be involved in rakugo and its English version. English
rakugo is effective in English education in that it focuses on reading
aloud, we can practice conversational English without a partner, and
we can learn our traditional culture and humor as well. Its
translation process is also very interesting from the cross-cultural
perspective.

Speaker (biodata):
Tatsuya Sudo graduated from Sophia University and completed TESOL
master course at Temple University. He has been teaching English in
Japan since the mid-1980s, and is currently a lecturer at KUIS or
Kanda University of International Studies where he teaches TOEFL
courses. He hes been teaching Rakugo in English since 2007 and has
been performing rakugo and Japanese traditional and modern music in
English at venues such as JICA, international hotels and accommodations
for foreign visitors and residents.
