アブスト Carol Frieze, a researcher from Carnegie Mellon University, will present her work on the role of culture and environment in creating a balanced Computer Science program in terms of breath of interests, student personalities, and particularly gender. She does not argue, as usually done, that there exist gender differences in how women relate to Computer Science, but rather that low participation of women comes from the culture surrounding Computer Science. She draws on a qualitative study done with the entering class of 2004 at Carnegie Mellon, the most successful CS department attempt to balance its gender ratio. She will also emphasise the importance of Women@SCS in that process, a group that she now directs.
