At this time, I would like to inform you the update regarding our roads & travel related conditions of the Big Island since the earthquake on October 15th.
Hotels:
Royal Kona Resort This hotel has been closed now. The restart schedule of the hotel is December 25.
Hilton Waikolaoa Villge Open and doing business as usual. No earthquake damage.
Mauna Lani Bay Hotel This hotel is partially open, however, the repairs are ongoing.
Tours:
The Ainori Donkey shuttle from Kohala Resorts to Kailua-Kona is operating as usual. Basically, there were no damage to the main highway along the west coast.
Lava Tours:
There are no changes in the condition of the current Kilauea lava flow. Red lava can still be observed within 50 minutes one way hiking through the Kalapana area. Please be informed that the Kalapana area is a private residential area and only can be accessed via approved companies with special arrangements.
Mauna Kea Star Gazing Tours:
All tours are operating as usual. No road or structural damages to summit area.
Others Sites:
Hulihee Palace: Closed Pololu Valley Trail: Closed Waipio Valley rd.Closed But Lookout all clea
Road Conditions:
Hamakua Hwy (19) 35 mile marker north from Hilo is open to one way traffic controlled by temporary traffic lights. All buses and tour transportations are able to drive through Hamakua Coast without any major delays now.
Akoni Pule Hwy (270) from Hawi to Pololu Valley is impassable on this road. Drive along main roads are recommended.
Smoking Ban as of November 16, 2006:
State of Hawaii will no longer allow smoking in open public areas such as airports, bars, nightclubs, small businesses or establishments with outdoor seating without proper 20-feet smoke free zones.
These smoke free zones must have windows and ventilation systems. Violations for individuals are $50.00 and business owners up to $500.00 for repeat offenders.
Also, smoking would be banned on public beaches and parks, and cigarette butts would have to be tossed only into designated trash bins. Violators could be fined $250.
The American Lung Association research has determined that second hand smoke causes adverse health effects, including cancer, respiratory infections, and asthma.
