Yoshio Toyama, the foremost exponent of New Orleans music outside of the United States, has embarked on a new exploration of the many kinds of music that was heard by his idol, Louis Armstrong, when he grew up in New Orleans more than 90 years ago. These are the roots of jazz as it sprang up at the start of the Twentieth Century, before the genius of Armstrong molded them into the music that captured the imagination and respect of the entire world.
