Sean had his 'welcome party' back in Japan on Sunday the 16th sept. 2007 after 5 long months away. He was greeted by his guest and character for the new Japan film Ray.
Ray has owned the cafe for over 20 years. He bought it after years of travelling around the world when he was settling back in Japan. He was left the land by his father and called it cafe stinger after his favourite cocktail. The cafe is built from a huge tent on the outside but you would never know so from within. Inside it is a spectacular display of antiques that Ray collected on his travels. Throughout the Stinger bar area is a fantastic wooden floor brought in from Britain. Around the place are great pieces of antique furniture, cabinets, seats, doors, pictures, mirrors, books, bookshelves.. An incredible display of a life's journey around the world.
I met Ray through a friend of a friend at the wonderful Tokyo art bar called The Pink Cow some 5 months ago. We immediately hit it off. He took me under his wing and has been a great host. The more I discovered about him the more I knew he was the key to my film here in Japan today. He took some persuading which is in part the reason I have been away for so long. After much discussing we are now filming together and on track to make a great film and fascinating insight to modern Japan.
Ray's girlfriend Chico has been running Cafe Stinger as her own venture without Ray for most of the past 20 years. But recently she has been struggling with the business. The law changed in Japan prohibiting anyone drinking alcohol to drive. As Caf? Stinger lies on the edge of a busy road transport is needed to get there. I know that Chico has been talking with Ray about opening something smaller closer to Tokyo. Ray has been thinking about this and his other concern; the restoration of an old house his father left him the country. The house lies in ruin and needs urgent attention if it is going to be saved.
My welcome party was a great night that I filmed as a great opening scene to the film. Out of the blue a man in a suit appeared wanting to talk with Ray. It was a developer who's been trying to meet Ray. He has plans to develop the area into new high rise apartments. So amidst the party celebrations I was outside the cafe filming heaving discussions about money and land as Ray was being offered big bucks to sell.
It seems I arrive as Cafe Stinger faces closure. But Ray says the sale of land will help Chico find something smaller nearer Tokyo. And there may even be some money left over to help Ray restore his beautiful old house in the country.
