Born in Yokohama, Fernandes spent more than 30 years in California as a performer, producer and curator. He has performed as a solo improviser and phonographer in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Hong Kong and throughout Japan. He has also performed in collaboration with numerous dancers, visual artists and ensembles as a percussionist and sound artist. Over 50 works are available through Accretions、Bake/Staalplaat, Circumvention, Pax, Pfmentum, Phonography.org, Public Eyesore, Solitary B and others.
First encountered the tabla travelling in India and Nepal in 1977. Active with improv band, "Hikashyu". Studied tabla under Junichi Nihashi. 1978, spent 3 years in Calcutta, India studying tabla under the great Pandit Mahapurush Misra and Pulak Datta. After returning to Japan in 1981 performed as a North Indian classical accompanist, developing into a cross-genre performer. 2001, released his first album as a leader, "Nigimitama".
From San Francisco, USA, has lived in Ecuador, Turkey and Japan among other countries. A musician and visual artist aiming for something between Ravi Shankar and Sonic Youth. Active as a core member of Mr. Busaichedelic San in Nagoya Japan between 2002~5, producing limited edition hand made CDR and Sound Collage Performances on a regular basis. He performed with Klangmutationen in Kuala Lumpur between '06 and '08, releasing the album, "WeißeMesse". Currently he is working on two solo recording projects called "Speedupandplaybackward" and "Ball".
"Adding an ethnic mood to American roots" - quote from Shin'ichi Isohata 1984, began collecting audio/ composing/ improvising after seeing live footage of Led Zeppelin. Performed on keyboards, guitar, drums, bass, etc in various genres. Became interested in East Asia reading "Ten Bulls" and other Zen writing. Worked in various media before studying in Japan for the first time in '95. Returned to Japan in '99 continuing underground activity as performer/ label/ promoter. Blasting Rod is one musical project.
