CHAPTER I

Down the Rabbit-Hole

第１章

ウサギ穴を降りると


　Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister

on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had

peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures

or conversations in it, "and what is the use of a book," thought

Alice, "without pictures or conversations?"


　アリスは退屈で堪らなくなって来て居た。土手の上で姉さんの側に座っ

ていたけど、何もする事はないし。一、二度姉さんの読んでいる本を覗い

てみたけど、挿絵も無ければ台詞も無い。「挿絵も台詞も無い本なんて、

どこが良いんだろう」と思って。


　So she was considering, in her own mind (as well as she could,

for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether

the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of

getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit

with pink eyes ran close by her.


　雛菊の花輪でも造ったら面白そうだけど、わざわざ立ち上がって摘み

に行くのも億劫だし、何しろこの暑さでは眠くて頭がぼうとしていて、

これだけ考えるのがやっとで。と、その時だった、ふいにピンクの目を

した白ウサギが一匹、すぐ側を通り過ぎて行った。


　There was nothing so very remarkable in that, nor did Alice

think it so very much out of the way to hear the Rabbit say to

itself "Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!" (when she thought

it over afterwards, it occurred to her that she ought to have

wondered at this, but at the time it all seemed quite natural);


それだけなら、別にどうってこともない、またそのウサギが、「大変だ、

大変だ、遅刻しそうだ！」とつぶやくのが聞こえたって、アリスは別に

不思議だとも思わなかった(後から思い返せば、これで驚かない方がどう

かしてると思ったものだけれど、その時はまったく当たり前のことみたい

な気がして)


but, when the Rabbit actually took a watch out of its waistcoat-

pocket, and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice started to her

feet for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen

a rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket, or a watch to take out of

it,


しかし、そのウサギがチョッキのポケットから本当に時計を取り出して、

時刻を確かめて、またせっせと駈けだした時には、さすがのアリスも思わ

ず飛び上がった。なぜかって、これでようやく気が付いたんだけれど、

だいたいウサギがチョッキを着てるなんて、また、そのポケットから時計

を取り出すなんて、今まで見たこともなかったのだから。


and, burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it,

and was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit-hole under

the hedge.


珍しさに駆られて、アリスはウサギの後を追って駈けだし、原っぱを

つっきると、ちょうどウサギが生け垣の下の大きな巣穴へピョンと

飛び込んだのが目に入った。


　In another moment down went Alice after it, never once consi-

dering how in the world she was to get out again.


　アリスもすぐさま続いて飛び込んだ。出る時にはどうするかなんて

てんで頭に無かった。


　The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way,

and then dipped suddenly down, so suddenly that Alice had not a

moment to think about stopping herself before she found herself

falling down what seemed to be a very deep well.


　ウサギ穴はしばらくのあいだ、トンネルみたいにまっすぐ進んで、

それからふいに下へ向かって、それも余りに突然で、立ち止まって考え

る隙もなく、気がついてみるともう、深い深い井戸みたいな所を、ぐん

ぐん下へ落ちてゆくところだった。


　Either the well was very deep, or she fell very slowly, for

she had plenty of time as she went down to look about her, and

to wonder what was going to happen next.


　よほど深い井戸なのか、それともアリスの落ち方がよっぽどのろい

のか、どっちかだ。ともかくそうやって落ちながら、あたりを見回した

り、今度は何が起こるかなんて考えたりする隙がたっぷりあった。


　First, she tried to look down and make out what she was

coming to, but it was too dark to see anything: then she looked

at the sides of the well, and noticed that they were filled with

cupboards and bookshelves: here and there she saw maps and pic-

tures hung upon pegs.


　アリスはまず下を見下ろして、行く手を見極めようとしたけど、

暗くて何も見えない。そこで四方の壁を眺めると、一面戸棚や本棚に

なっていて、地図や絵があちこちに掛かっている。


　She took down a jar from one of the shelves as she passed:

it was labeled "ORANGE MARMALADE," but to her great disappoint-

ment it was empty: she did not like to drop the jar, for fear of

killing somebody underneath, so managed to put it into one of the

cupboards as she fell past it.


　彼女は通りすがりに棚からひとつ、びんを取ってみた。[オレンジ・

マーマレード]とラベルには有るけど、残念なことに空っぽだった。でも

うっかり捨てて、下にいる人に当たって死んだりされては困るし、そこ

でまた通りすがりの棚に突っ込んでおくことにした。


　"Well!" thought Alice to herself. "After such a fall as this,

I shall think nothing of tumbling down-stairs! How brave they'll

all think me at home! Why, I wouldn't say anything about it, even

if I fell off the top of the house!" (Which was very likely true.)


　「いいわ、これだけ落ちれば、もう階段を転げ落ちたって、何とも

思わなくなるもの。」と、アリスは独り言を言った。「帰ったら皆が、

なんて偉い子と思うだろうな。そうよ、屋根のてっぺんから落ちたって、

声一つ立てやしないから。」(そりゃあ、ごもっともですけどね。)


　Down, down, down. Would the fall never come to an end? "I wonder

how many miles I've fallen by this time?" she said aloud. "I must

be getting somewhere near the centre of the earth. Let me see:

that would be four thousand miles down, I think-" (for, you see,

Alice had learnt several things of this sort in her lessons in

the school-room, and though this was not a very good opportunity

for showing off her knowledge, as there was no one to listen to

her, still it was good practice to say it over)


　ぐん、ぐん、ぐんと落ちて行く。いつになったらおしまいなんだろう。

「もう何マイル落ちて来たかしらん」と、アリスは声に出して言ってみた。

「多分もう、地球の真ん中辺りまで、来ちゃってるわ。ええと、半径4000

マイルだとすると-」(アリスはこういった事を授業で教わっていたんでね。

でも、こんな所で物知りぶったって、誰も聞いてやしないし、あまり良い

チャンスでも無いけれど、おさらいしておくにこしたことはない。)


　"-yes, that's about the right distance-but then I wonder what

Latitude or Longitude I've got to?" (Alice had not the slightest

idea what Latitude was, or Longitude either, but she thought they

were nice grand words to say.)


　「-そう、距離から言えば、まあそんなとこ-だけど、緯度と経度から

言うと、どこら辺なんだろう？」(緯度とか経度とか言ったって、アリス

には全然わけが分からないけれども、ともかくもたいぶった言葉を口に

してみたかった。)


　Presently she began again. "I wonder if I shall fall right

through the earth! How funny it'll seem to come out among the

people that walk with their heads downwards! The antipathies,

I think-" (she was rather glad there was no one listening,

this time, as it didn't sound at all the right word)


　またもや独り言の始まりだ。「このまま地球を突き抜けちゃうの

かしらん？　頭を下に歩いてる人の中へ、ひょっこりあたしが出て

行ったら、さぞ滑稽だろうな。確か対蹠地とか言うのよね-」(こんど

ばかりは誰にも聞かれないで良かった。どう見ても、この言葉は怪し

げだから)


"-but I shall have to ask them what the name of the country

is, you know. Please, Ma'am, is this New Zealand? Or Australia?"

(and she tried to curtsey as she spoke-fancy, curtseying as

you're falling through the air! Do you think you could manage

it?) "And what an ignorant little girl she'll think me for

asking! No, it'll never do to ask: perhaps I shall see it

written up somewhere."


「でも、着いたらそこの人達に、国の名前を聞かなくちゃ。奥様、

恐れ入りますけど、ここはニュージーランドでしょうか、それとも

オーストラリアでしょうか」(言いながらアリスはお辞儀をしようと

して前かがみになった---ね、落ちながら宙に浮かんだままで、お辞

儀をするなんて、そんな芸当、上手く出来るだろうか？)「こんな事

を聞いたら、なんて世間知らずのお嬢さんかとおもわれちゃいそう。

いいわ、絶対聞かないことにしよう。きっと何処かに書いてあるもの」


　Down, down, down. There was nothing else to do, so Alice

soon began talking again. "Dinah'll miss me very much to-night,

I should think!" (Dinah, was the cat.) "I hope they'll remember

her saucer of milk at tea-time. Dinah my dear! I wish you were

down here with me! There are no mice in the air, I'm afraid,

but you might catch a bat, and that's very like a mouse, you

know. But do cats eat bats, I wonder?"


　ぐん、ぐん、ぐうん。落ちるばかりで、何もする事が無いので、

アリスはまたもやおしゃべりを始めた。「今夜はあたしが居ないので、

ダイナがさぞ寂しがるだろうな(ダイナは猫だ)。誰かお茶の時に、

ダイナにミルクをやるのを、忘れないでくれると良いけれど。可愛い

ダイナ！　あなたもいっしょに落ちてくれれば良かったのに。空中

には、ネズミは居ないようだけれども、コウモリなら捕まえられる

でしょう。あれならネズミそっくりじゃないの。でも、猫って、

コウモリ食べるのかな？」


And here Alice began to get rather sleepy, and went on

saying to herself, in a dreamy sort of way, "Do cats eat bats?

Do cats eat bats?" and sometimes "Do bats eat cats?", for, you

see, as she couldn't answer either question, it didn't much

matter which way she put it.


そういっているうちに、アリスはだんだん眠たくなってきて、

もうろうとしながら、まだ独り言っをぶつぶつと、「猫ってコウモリ

食べるのかな、猫ってコウモリ食べるのかな」。それが時々、「コウ

モリって猫食べるのかな」だったりして。アリスにはどうせ答えられ

ないわけだから、どっちが先でも構わないものだけれども。


She felt that she was dozing off, and had just begun to

dream that she was walking hand in hand with Dinah, and was

saying to her, very earnestly, "Now, Dinah, tell me the truth:

did you ever eat a bat?", when suddenly, thump! thump! down she

came upon a heap of sticks and dry leaves, and the fall was over.


彼女はうつらうつらしていると自分でもおもった。夢ではいましも

ダイナと手を繋いで歩きながら、しきりにダイナに尋ねている所だった。

「ねえ、ダイナ、本当の事を言って、コウモリ食べた事あって？」と、

そこでいきなり、スッテンコロン！アリスは小枝や枯葉の山の上に

尻餅をついた。墜落はこれで終わりってわけだ。


　Alice was not a bit hurt, and she jumped up on to her feet

in a moment: she looked up, but it was all dark overhead: before

her was another long passage, and the White Rabbit was still in

sight, hurrying down it. There was not a moment to be lost: away

went Alice like the wind, and was just in time to hear it say,

as it turned a corner, "Oh my ears and wiskers, how late it's

getting!"


　アリスは怪我一つ無く、すぐさましゃんと立ち上がって、上を

見ても今来た方は真っ暗だ。目の前にはまた長い通路が有って、さ

っきの白ウサギが相変わらず急いで行く。これはいっときもぐずぐ

ずしっちゃ居られない。アリスは風の様に飛んで行って、ウサギが

角を曲がる寸前に、「やれやれ、どうするんだい。たいした遅刻だ

よなあ！」とつぶやくのが、ようやく聞こえた。


She was close behind it when she turned the corner, but the

Rabbit was no longer to be seen: she found herself in a long,

low hall, which was lit up by a row of lamps hanging from the

roof.


彼女はすぐ後ろまで迫っていたつもりなのに、角を曲がるとウサギ

はもう見当たらなかった。そこは細長い、天井の低い大広間で、天井

からはランプが一列にぶら下がって、辺りを照らして居た。
