The Devendra Banhart art show at Roth Horowitz Gallery (NYC)
Mr. Banhart's music is superb; but his artwork might be even better! I cannot stop gazing at his soft, hypnotic lines and calligraphic musings.

Madame Fortuna vintage charm necklaces (at FORTUNA in Williamsburg, BKLYN)
Divine and powerful. Have one custom-made to suit your needs and aesthetic.

The Highwayman (a play by Julia Jarcho) at The National Theater for the United States of America (DUMBO)
Smart, sweet, and funny with beautiful dialogue--so much like its young writer/director. Remember her name.

The End of the World Party (just in case) by MMW
Being married to 1/3 of this amazing trio has no bearing on this top 10 choice. Put it on. Shake your butt. Let the kids stay up late.

Camille and the Sunflowers by Laurence Anholt
This children's book about Van Gogh and his relationship to the little boy (Camille Roulin) in the Arles paintings completely helped inspire my four year-old to take an interest in Van Gogh.

Logona-Kosmetik "Kids" Body Milk
I am a baby toiletries FANATIC. I've tried them all. But this German line is the best! They use only the purest organic ingredients. Soft, gentle, and yummy smelling--good for the whole family!

www.mamakita.com
A new website for cool and crafty moms--and everyone around them.

Romare Bearden at the Whitney (NYC)
One of America's most important artists, who explored nearly every medium: paintings, drawings and watercolors, collages of diverse materials (see Patchwork Quilt), sculpture; designs for record albums, costumes, book illustrations, etc, etc... Pure inspiration.

CHRONICLES Volume One by Bob Dylan
The majestic musical storyteller spins his tales. Must-read for Dylan fans.

My Nina Simone t-shirt from the ropeadope Respects Series
This t-shirt brings good: good fortune, good looks, good ideas, good vibes, good golly! Put it on and listen to the High Priestess sing "Feelin' Good" and you'll know just what I mean.

my top 10 musical things for 2004? impossible to pick 10, so instead i'll go with "first 10 things that pop into my mind when thinking about 2004":::

-antibalas - i love everything about these guys and feel blessed to have the privelage of putting out their records. of course we all know how dope the band is, but what very few people can possibly comprehend is that these guys are the realest of the real, the most authentically authentic artists i've ever been around, nothing but respect for these guys AND for their manager alex that should get an award of sorts for being able to keep up with all 17 of them.

-mf doom - anything and everything he touched this year - from madvillain, to victor vaughn to mf food, doom made me fall in love with hip-hop all over again.

-the black keys - rubber room - real rock and roll lives on - you all need to get this album

-ropeadope new music seminar - quite simply the best musical experience of my life.

-the polyphonic spree at the angel orensanz cener in nyc - was by far and away the best concert i saw all year.

-modest mouse - "good news...." - this was just one of those records that kept getting better everytime i spun it and became the first album in years that i can recite word for word.

-coolest concept for a record: the foreign exchange " connected" (BBE )- phonte of little brother, hooks up with niicolay, a producer from the netherlands, via the okayplayer message board! the two trade tracks and lay down vocals over IM without every physically meeting and they wind up creating one of my favorite hip-hop albums of the year

-most overly hyped, but totally worth it record: -tv on the radio - belive the hype

-my favorite old record that i listened to almost every day in 2004 - keith jarret - the koln concerts - man that shit just puts me where i need to be.

-can't wait for 2005 - best year ever. love ya. mean it.

★★★mike gordon's top ten list★★★

1. Best Album(s) of 2004
* Toots and the Maytals - with people like "Trey" (True to the old classics, with fresh blood added).
* Mark O'Conner - Appalachian Swing (Especially, "Limelight" - fiddle song with classical fervor)\
* Bane - Joey Arkenstat (Damn, that guy rocks)

2. Favorite Live Performance(s) of 2004
* Ben Harper with Blind Boys of Alabama, The Apollo (liked it 1000 times better than BH in VT a few years ago)
* Orchestra Baobab, Higher Ground, VT, April (Closing of Higher Ground, old location. Mystical, danceable, emotional)
* Ricky Skaggs, Mark OConner, NY, October (O'Conner had great jazz trio, Skaggs had Wycliff Gordon on Trombone)

3. Your Personal Favorite On-stage Moment/Show of 2004
* Final Phish set at Alpine Valley, June (Loved)
* With band, "Thought" in Buffalo, Sept. (Was a tiny bar; felt good. great drummer and bass-trumpeter)
* With Russo/Benevento Duo, BB Kings, NY, June (Unrehearsed, we clicked with unexpected magic).

3. Classic Album or Artist You Rediscovered This Year
* Leo Kottke - Standing In My Shoes (Produced by David Z, who will be working with Leo and me in Dec '04)\
* Tim and Molly O'brien - Away Out on the Mountain (Learned several of the songs on here)
* Diblo with Loketo - Super Soukous (These are classic to me)

4. Artist You Are Most Excited About In 2005 (any medium)
* Russel Batiste (I just want him to release the album I played on, with other great cuts)
* Me (I need to develop this kind of arrogance to help launch the solo career)
* Someone I haven't discovered yet. Perhaps I'll discover in "March" or "June." Would have great clarinet and tabla.

5. Best New Gadget/Equipment/Technology you can't live without
* What I call "The Flashlight of Life" - from Sharper Image (battery lasts 10 years, is 100 times brighter than Maglight)
* The Mac G5 tower (It's quieter, which could be great for soft recording on the computer)
* Mosquito Magnet (Clears two acres of mosquitos. Bought it, but haven't plugged it in yet. Is this okay for vegans?).

6. New Hobby Discovered This Year (skiing, yoga, Texas hold 'em?)
* Counterpoint (taking lessons - the Schoenberg course - with Paul Caputo, NY)
* EMDR (nuff said)
* Reading (Rediscovered)

7. Your Guilty Pleasure of the Year (watching The Bachelor, Maxim, Clay Aiken's album?)
* Law and Order (Best while eating ice cream)
* Oatmeal cookie icecream (B&J's. It's the cinnamin background that gets me)
* Expensive Sunglasses (Planet Eyewear, Atlanta)

8. The Retro Comeback You're Hoping For in 2005?
* Neon green

* Rotary Dial (I'd like to see this on a celphone)
* Phish (not really)

9. Your Selection for Person Of The Year
* Jared Slomoff - runs my production comp. Talented, Friendly. Phish folks love him. Call him. He'll make you a great album.
* John Quincy Adams - long dead, but his quote in Imperial Hubris about not "spreading democracy" is valid.
* Ned Kahn - designer of nature-like sculptures (The Exploratorium and elsewhere) - saw his very inspiring lecture

10. A Memorable/ Humorous/Classic Moment on the tour bus/on the road in 2004
* Had "last lunch" with just the band in exotic Philly sushi joint, Morimoto. Games like: "favorite moment of debauchery"
* Driving away from the last Phish concert ever had poignancy
* Lost camera in Vegas casino; pic of cucumbers in Trey's eyes would have been Undermind cover. Was returned too late.
