世間の目に映るあなたの外見は
よく考えてみても修正するような欠点を持たない
あらゆる人々の魂の声があなたにそういう評価を与える
敵さえも認めざるを得ないまぎれもない真実を口にして、
あなたの外見はこのように外見に対する称賛で飾られる
だがあなたに称賛を与える人々が
別の言い方をしてその称賛を混乱させる
目が見たところよりももっと深いところを見ることにより、
人々はあなたの心も美しいかどうかを覗き込んで
それをあなたの行いによって判断する、
そして人々の野卑な思考は　人々の目が好意的であったにしても
あなたの美しい花に雑草の不快な臭いを付け加えようとする、
だがあなたの名声があなたの見かけに釣り合わないことがあるだろうか
なぜならあなたは社会的によく知られているのだから。

Thy outward thus with outward praise is crown'd;
But those same tongues, that give thee so thine own,
In other accents do this praise confound
By seeing farther than the eye hath shown.
They look into the beauty of thy mind,
And that in guess they measure by thy deeds;
Then, churls, their thoughts, although their eyes were kind,
To thy fair flower add the rank smell of weeds:
But why thy odour matcheth not thy show,
The soil is this, that thou dost common grow.
