"Tom Sachs, who often creates controversy in the art world, has been at the center of attention and discussion in New York City a number of times in the past. One example was his window display at Barney's clothing store. The display, which he called "The Birth of Jesus Christ," featured Madonna (pop star), Hello Kitty, and characters from the animated sitcom, "The Simpsons," as sacred religious figures (Christ, the Virgin Mary). For this display, Sachs became the focus of sharp criticism by conservative Christians. When Sachs held a one-man exhibition at the famous Mary Boone gallery, he offered a bowl of real bullets to gallery visitors. Boone herself was arrested and briefly jailed by the N.Y.P.D. over this exhibit. The two incidents were widely covered by city media.
