Y.A.A. / Yokohama Analogue Association
(in English statement is bottom of it.)
Y.A.A. MISSION STATEMENT:
Y.A.A., or Yokohama Analogue Association, is an association of like-minded individuals who want to convey the charm of real analogue sound and synthesisers to others. Our mission is to deepen people's enjoyment of analogue sound, whether it be with synthesisers, amps, turntables or studio and hi-fi equipment. We are looking to collaborate with others who feel the same way we do, whether musician, artist, DJ or producer.
You do not have to be from Yokohama to join us! It's just that we happened to begin our quest in Yokohama, and Yokohama has a certain charm which we feel can sometimes be lacking in Tokyo. We want to encourage and develop local talent, as well as taking our sound further afield.
We started in the autumn of 2006 with two live events featuring only analogue synthesisers, both of which were a great success. We also hope to do a lot more live events in the future.
As for musical style or genre barriers, we have NONE: Techno, Ambient, Hip-Hop, Reggae, Dub, Pop, Rock, Noise, Experimental or Avant-Garde - anything is OK, as long as it features mainly analogue instruments or production.
As well as live musical events, we also hope to hold workshops in the future featuring analogue modular synthesisers and programming techniques, and are interested in fixed installations and art gallery work too.
Our main aim is EDUCATION. We feel people brought up on a diet of Virtual Analogue (VA) synthesisers, DAW's, and poor quality CD's and mp3's, ought to have the chance to hear what real hi-fidelity analogue sound is capable of. We are fans of turntables, vacuum tubes and Class A amps ;)
One of our main questions is: "Why does analogue equipment seem to be becoming less common, even though the sound quality is obviously superior and more emotionally involving?"
We are now living in the age of DIGITITIS. People rant and rave about their "Virtual Analogue" synthesisers and the supposed quality of their mp3's and players.
We are NOT luddites, we are not against digital technology per se, but feel that the opportunities for NEW sound that digital offers us are not being fully investigated. Why make a "Virtual Analogue Synthesiser" when you can buy a "Real Analogue Synthesiser" that sounds better? Why don't companies focus on "Real Digital" instead, and come up with new synthesis techniques that are not capable of being produced on a traditional analogue instrument?
We feel the answer lies in mass production costs, hype, marketing, and electronic instrument companies riding the wave of "Retro" fashion.
Now is the time for analogue synthesis! There are currently more companies producing analogue modular synthesisers for a cheaper price than EVER BEFORE!!! Now is the time to re-evaluate the analogue sound!
Digital sound has a tendency to be cold, sterile and piercing, whereas analogue sound has a tendency to be warm, phat and involving.
Of course we may be sadly mistaken, and history and technology may prove us wrong, but we feel passionately that ANALOGUE SOUND is a strong spiritual force to be reckoned with!
If you feel the same way, or are interested in finding out more and hearing REAL ANALOGUE SOUND, then please join us!
Best wishes,
Y.A.A.
