When the Sex Pistols appeared on the British music scene in 1976, they changed the rock landscape forever. In doing this, they proved that absolutely anyone could pick up a guitar, form a group, and be heard. Punk rock took England by storm in '76 and '77. By 1982, many early fans believed that punk had run its course. In any case, a number of D.I.Y., hardcore punk groups originated in the early 1980s. These groups enjoyed success in the "alternative" music scene and kept the traditional punk ethic alive.
Bristol punk rockers Vice Squad and Simon Edwards co-founded Riot City Records in 1980. At the time, no one knew how prosperous the tiny label would be. By 1982, Vice Squad had signed to Zonophone, a division of EMI. Edwards took full control over Riot City Records, and by mid-year, the label had released several successful singles by bands such as Chaos UK and Abrasive Wheels. The same year, Edwards began compiling songs for a punk compilation LP. This album would be Riot City's first long-player. During this time, Edwards was given a cassette tape by a Vice Squad roadie. Labeled "Chaotik Discord," the tape featured "Glue Accident," a musical torture test featuring incoherent vocals and furious playing. The song was included on the compilation, but Simon Edwards had no idea who this band really was. In reality, "Chaotik Discord" was a joke created by Vice Squad and their roadies.
Without even knowing the band's personnel, Edwards added Chaotik Discord to his label and helped finance the group's initial recordings. Chaotik Discord quickly became infamous for their drug-induced antics and debased musical compositions. Chaotik Discord (now spelled Chaotic Dischord) released their first single, "Fuck The World," in late 1982; it promptly reached #7 on the UK Indie Singles chart. "Never Trust a Friend" soon followed. Simon Edwards finally discovered the true identity of Chaotic Dischord around this time. According to Vice Squad's Beki Bondage, he was "not pleased."
In 1983, Riot City released several LPs, including Chaotic Dischord's debut effort. Fuck Religion, Fuck Politics, Fuck The Lot Of You was a disconcerting, direct attack on complacency and all things organized. Recorded at Sam Studio in Bristol in several days, the album condemned religion, hippies, and government, but it also celebrated total chaos, the spirit of punk, and "alternative culture." It even featured a cover of The Lurkers' "Shadow," unsurprisingly ending in complete noise. A crackpot masterpiece, the LP sold over 10,000 copies, and Chaotic Dischord became underground punk heroes.
The group's next release, a mini-LP titled Don't Throw It All Away, contained several songs featuring The Damned's Captain Sensible and Knox from The Vibrators. The album's second half featured five lightning-fast Dischord classics, including the notorious "Who Killed ET?" Live In New York, the group's second full-length LP, was issued in 1984. Despite the title, the album, which featured all-new material, was recorded in a studio with overdubs of a screaming audience. The album turned out to be the last ever released by Riot City, as the label folded in late 1984.
Little is known about Fuck Off You Cunt, a 1984 release credited to Chaotic Dischord and distributed on the Syndicate label. Featuring fifteen songs about booze and sexual depravity, vocals are credited to "Aphrodite" (possibly Beki Bondage), and all songs on the LP were written by "Burchill."
Bristol-based Heartbeat Productions formed Not Very Nice Records and released the Dischord compilation album Now! That's What I Call A Fuckin' Racket in 1985. At this point in their career, Chaotic Dischord began to resemble an actual band, utilizing more traditional writing and recording techniques. 1986 saw the release of Goat Fuckin' Virgin Killerz From Hell, arguably their most cohesive effort. The lyrics were more intelligible and focused, and the playing and production were tighter. Regardless, vulgarity and tastelessness were at an all-time high. Songs about rape, beastiality, violence, necrophilia, animal cruelty, and poor hygiene were proudly showcased on the LP. Very Fuckin' Bad, featuring an album cover poking fun at Michael Jackson, was issued in 1988. The LP included such Dischord favorites as "Psycho Hippy Skateboard Punx" and "Where Have All The Glueheads Gone?" Nonetheless, the album was a close copy of its predecessor, and Chaotic Dischord was clearly becoming formulaic. With record sales and general interest low, the group fizzled shortly after the release.
A new generation of fans was introduced to Chaotic Dischord in the 1990s. Fuck Off You Cunt was re-issued as You've Got To Be Obscene To Be Heard on Step-1 Records in 1995. A "greatest hits" package was released by Anagram Records in 1996. Shortly thereafter, Anagram re-released four classic Dischord albums on compact disc. Several of the band's better-known tracks have made their way onto late-90s punk compilations. Completely unpretentious and sonically brutal, Chaotic Dischord began as a musical gag and ended up releasing some of the most anarchistic, obnoxious, and memorable music in the history of punk rock.
