Open Source Software and Standards Revisited 02/15/2006, 4:10 PM - 5:00 PM Moderator: Andrew Updegrove, Partner, Gesmer Updegrove LLP.
Speakers: Tim Bray, Director of Web Technologies, Sun Microsystems, Inc. Robert Sutor, Dr.Vice President, Standards & Open Source, IBM. Stephen Walli, Vice President, Open Source Development Strategy, Optaros. Jason Matusow, Shared Source Initiative, Microsoft Corp.
There has long been debate over the relationship between free and open source software and standards in the industry. Do they overlap? Are they at odds with one another? Is one an evolution of the other? Once again this debate is raised. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts chose the OASIS Open Document Format standard for future document management, a standard developed around and supported by the OpenOffice software suite. Microsoft has recently taken its proprietary Office document formats to ECMA to standardize, arguing this will make the specifications available to all implementers including open source developers. This panel brings standards and open source experts together to discuss the real relationship between open source and standards and the value of the relationship to the enterprise.
"I heard him (MSのJason) say that Microsoft is defining the new Microsoft Office standard indeed to encourage multiple implementations, AND to encourage developers to innovate around the Microsoft Office document formats. "
