My name is Kevin Stein. I was an ALT in Ishikawa Prefecture for 3 years and worked for a local board of Education in Shiga Prefecture for 2 years as an elementary school coordinator. During four years of working at a large international center, I held a number of trainings for elementary teachers and ran a number of cross culture lessons for elementary schools. Using this experience, I put together a university course on how to teach English to elementary school students based on the MEXT Foreign Language Activities Guidelines. I just finished teaching the course at Kio University in Nara Prefecture. The course went well and I was wondering if you might be kind enough to provide me with some feedback on the course content.
If you want to take a peek at the syllabus as it was presented at KIO , it is online on the KIO website at:
I have since modified it slightly to include activities on raising students awareness of the difference between English and Japanese, a cultural understanding component, and an explicit review of the Ministry of Education Guidelines and how they can be used to create a well organized EFL classroom. I have a modified syllabus in MS Word file format for anyone interested. I have already developed all of the supplementary materials for this course including handouts, worksheets and tests.
I am hoping that the materials I have developed might be useful for other teachers or for MEXT in general. If there is anyone at the Ministry of Education who would be interested in contacting me, I would be happy to answer any questions you might have.
