Hello b-members! Today I’m going to talk about some interesting expressions in English using the word “elephant”. We don’t use these much in everyday conversation, but they often appear in movies, books and television.
A “white elephant” is a gift that is expensive but useless. This expression comes from an old story about a king who received a white elephant as a gift. It was rare and beautiful, but it ate a lot of food and took up a lot of space, so it was useless.
An “elephant in the room” is a big problem that no one wants to talk about, because it is too difficult or embarrassing. The image is of people in a small room with a big elephant, walking carefully around it so they don’t bother it.
We say that we see “pink elephants” when we’ve had too much to drink. The most famous example of this is in the Disney movie, Dumbo, when Dumbo drinks a little beer by mistake.
