I have a ritual, a silly one.
The night before christmas, I have a movie-thon, of all those christmas classics.
Does anyone have a special movie to watch religiously around this time of the year?
I got several, so here they go:
- A nightmare before Christmas
- Ed Scissorhands
- Home alone 3
- The grinch (the cartoon, not the one with Jim Carrey)
- Great Expectations (this one has one has nothing to do with christmas but i always watch it for some reason)

Does anyone have more christmas movies?

We should make a ranking...
something like: The top 10 movies watchable in christmas

I really love "The Ref" with Dennis Leary. It's quite brilliant.
It's funny but I don't really know all that many really good ones.
There is an Christmas episode of MASH which I really like. The one
where they are trying to keep the man alive till December 26 so
his kids at home won't have Christmas forever the anniversary of
their fathers death. I also kind of like the Southpark Christmas
specials, and the Festivus episode of Seinfeld always cracks me
up...but that's all TV.
Then I'm thinking of creating a second ranking for Tv Christmas specials.
That would be hard beacuse a top 10 is still little.
But it counts ! thanks for adding Rajio!
How about TRADING PLACES with Eddie Murphy back when he was in his prime?

Or a cult classic like SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT?

If we are allowed any movie that kinda works at Christmas in a looser (not 'loser'...hope not anyway) way...how about these for the top10;

・BAD SANTA with Billy Bob Thornton - one of his best performances I think
・GREMLINS I like part II, but take your pick...
・TITANIC you hate it, but your girlfriend probably loves it so it's eligible...(笑)
・DIE HARD - "ho ho ho, now I have a machine gun"
・Some film with Dudley Moore in it and loads of elves, forgot the title, but have a vague memory of it being funny
・Any random JAMES BOND film - don't know but it just seems appropriate
・HOME ALONE Joe Pesci is in it....
・NOEL my girlfriend just recommended this one
・ALFIE another one courtesy of my better half
・SCROOGED Bill Murray before ironic comeback

I'll try and think of some better films, but good luck with the top10 Andi

Cheers

I really like Go... It really doesn't get you in the Christmas spirit at all though, lol.

I like Home Alone as well. The best Christmas movie ever.
Hello,

I can not think of any film that is something watchable in the festive season...

I've got a few toys of the nightmare before Christmas, which I love. I love skull stuff.
I am kind of sick of the TV programmes that is always same stuff on every year!! Love actually,EEWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't stand it!!
This year, I enjoyed with digest of "X factor".
I like Simon's comments that always make me laugh. You can see it in youtube if you are interested in.

Merry Christmas.
Die Hard is a brilliant choice. Also speaking of action films, wasn't
one of the Lethal Weapon films set during Christmas?
6> hey there rajio

Yeah I think the first one was....I hazily remember Ricks and Gary whatsit (POINT BREAK) having a kung fu fight in Danny Glover's garden, and there was a Christmas Tree, and some fairy lights in the background.....
LETHAL WEAPON, like DIE HARD was set in L.A, so not very seasonal weather, but yeah they're both Crimbo films, and excellent examples of the lost art of action film making (are you listening Tony Scott, Len Wiseman?)...
They were also both written by the same guy, Shane Black - the first script writer to get a million dollars for a script...and that script he got a million for was...(drum roll)....LETHAL WEAPON

I don't know why, but I kinda like JINGLE ALL THE WAY with Schwarzenegger - would that be eligible for consideration?
Hi,did you all have a good Christmas?
I can't think of 10 films, but these followings are in my list anyway.

Bad Santa(Billy Bob Thornton)
Die Hard
Christmas Vacation(Chevy Chase)
Nightmare before Christmas
Home Alone
hey everybody and hope you all had a great christmas!
I think there's a pattern of action movies during christmas, and even If those arent on my top 10 I remember having seen Lethal Weapon, Die Hard and True Lies, and Rush hour during christmas. It wasn't a personal request but somehow everyone agreed on watching them. I think that in one way or another action movies brings people together. We all end up making comments about them and having a great time!

(and yeah, I hate Love, Actually too Aya, it's as boring as reading the phonebook)

I remember also watching a very cheesy and almost forgotten fiasco about a guy's kid who liked this Turboman action figure and the father struggles to get one as thousands of other parents try as well.

My question about it is: What's the name of the movie and was Schwarznegger on it?

Does anyone know which movie is it?

3) ...
I don't know what to say about Gremlins... The first one seemed ok. (the first clones of gizmo were still watchable)

Titanic is a must see is the lady is over for dinner. Some might not like it but that's that. so I agree to add it up.

And what about The Dark Crystal? I used to scare my little nephews with being kidnapped by David Bowie...

one last thing: What other scripts have been written by Shane Black?

9> Hi photoandi,

That arnie movie is the one I mentioned in (7) - it's called JINGLE ALL THE WAY

Re : Shane Black - here you go;

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000948/

Hehehe Why is Great Expectations on near Christmas time every year?? I do like that film though.

Mine is rather modern, Love Actually. I also watch Gone With the Wind when I'm not sick of it. lol

I watch Nightmare Before Christmas on Halloween more than on Christmas. They r at the cinemas every year for Halloween as well.

does anyone remember "Black Christmas"? They released this horror last year. I thought it was funny how unfestive ( thats not even a word!) the theme was.
Hey ...!
Long time no see! merry Christmas and thanks for the link.
I'll be off to Tsutaya (or GEO) to get all Shane's goods.
11) hey Midge,
Why is Great Expectations on near Christmas time every year?

... I don't know. But it's true. It is near. :)

I think gone with the wind is like a movie-thon killer. I mean, it's not that its bad (even God likes it) but it's just too long. that would do perfectly fine on a slow paced sunday afternoon or an evening with your girl/boyfriend. (i wonder though if blood on the cheeks would make them look red...)

on another note, Jingle All The Way was not a success was it?
I couldn't even remember it's name. (unlike Detective in Kindergarten) haha, I swear if Arnie wouldn't be in it. It would be completely doomed to oblivion. with Arnold... it's just "almost".

My ex girlfriend loved watching romatic comedies on christmas eve... is that a female ritual as well?
I mean Romantic Comedies as in "addicted to Love" or, "As good as it gets" not a chick flick like save the last dance or sorts.

I like romantic movies but I hate the "Sleepless in Seattle", "You've Got Mail"
type of films....in fact if Meg Ryan or Sandra Bullock are in them, they'll
probably make me feel ill.
Not really a Christmas movie, but for romance I really love "O-kaeri" (obviously
Japanese) which is about a woman going crazy and the sacrifices her husband
makes for her. Actually I forgot my favourite Christmas movie which is also
Japanese. The animated film called "Tokyo Godfathers". Quite brilliant.
12> Hi again, yeah my work has just been so crazy this year I rarely have the chance or energy to get on mixi...but it's good to speak to you all again!

Re: Shane Black - yeah check out some of his films, but I think the million dollars poisoned him to be honest with you. His films were never as good again, especially more recent ones. Maybe it's a time thing, his best films worked perhaps because of the times in which they got made. If DIE HARD never happened when it did, and someone wrote that story and pitched it today; 1) it wouldn't get made without a PG13 rating (no "fuck" bombs in the dialog and toned down blood); 2) A relative no-one like Bruce Willis would never get casted. It'd be Aston Kutcher or some bullshit 3) They wouldn't give the project to a director like John McTiernan it'd go to some name value MTV music video director who can't keep a camera still longer than 5seconds 4) they'd muck about with the script to kill all the jokes and generally cheese it up as much as possible...put lots of cliches in there that only movie producers could think are funny or actually work on real human beings from planet earth...
The Reagan/Bush (1st) years in America were more or less Action's golden age, and I think you'll find that's where most of the best pictures were made in this Genre...at the moment I think we are just incapable as a culture to reach those heights again.
Lets hope for some game changing development in 2008 (laughs)

Re: Romantic comedies etc. In my experience most girls prefer a romantic film to a 'serious' dramatic film. That's not a condemnation. But the nature of that market has studios pumping these things out like pop songs. I think Josh Hartnett has made a small fortune just from these cookie cutter romantic movies made for 15-30 y/o women. Really. It's un-nerving how many times he's in these funky-girl-falls-in-love films. I know because my girlfriend always rents this kind of film - that's not because she's a Josh fan (I think she's a Jude Law kinda girl)...I think the majority of girls rent these movies for the actress, not the male love interest - speaking of which, Goldie Hawn's daughter crops up a lot as that female lead in these types of film...I think she must have made a quiet fortune tooドル袋

Still, I'm quite pleasantly suprised by a lot of these movies. If I didn't have a girlfriend I'd never see them, or consider seeing them - but they aren't all that hard to sit through, and on some occasions I find myself well entertained by them...especially at Crimbo : )
