It used to be that when the credits started rolling, everyone would get up an leave, but that all changed in the mid-1980s. One of Jackie Chan's trademarks is to run out-takes during the closing credits and he first did it on a film called "Project A" Jackie Chan has quite an ego and when one of his stunts went wrong he decided to run the footage through the closing credits so everyone could see what happened. It proved popular and he started doing it in all his films. Other directors started doing it and with the advent of DVD it went a little berserk for a while before they poked fun at it in "The Incredibles" and it settled down a little. Sometimes it's done really well, "Meet the Parents" springs to mind but usually it's something for the die hard fans and everyone else might as well get a head start on the toilets.
So do you like it or does it bug you? When has it been done well and when would you rather have teeth pulled than watch it again. One of my favourite actors is Johnny Depp... which puts me in a quandary because my least favourite actors are Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly. You'd think being on set with someone as good as Johnny Depp they'd learn something, but the plank of wood beside them still always manages to steal the scene. Anyway that's neither here nor there but it brings up the one that really bugs me. In "Pirates of the Katamori"....you know the second one with all the rolling, I dutifully waited till the very end of the credits and what did they give me? A dog on a throne! I waited 3 minutes for that!!!
Other films that have done it are X-Men, The Incredibles, Meet the Parents, Transformers, Jackie Chan did it in just about every film he made after 1985 and because Jackie did it, Sammo Hung copied. They're the ones I can think of in 30 seconds...maybe you can think of a few more.
I've got to admit I'm one of those people who turns off the DVD when the credits come on, either that or hit the "menu" button and go watch the bonus or re-watch the film with the Director's commetary track...
I rarely get out to the Cinema, but when I do I watch the credits a little - mostly just waiting for the stampede to the door to quiet down though. (I'm one of the many people who don't board the plane when they open the gate, wait for the line to abate a little first etc...same thing at the movies)
But I don't really remember any end credits that I liked.
I think I'm into opening credits more - I love the films that do credits while the film is actually starting. My best example is a bit cheesy, but really well done - it's a Steven Segal film called OUT FOR JUSTICE. A suprisingly good film.
The film opens with a pimp slapping one of his workers up, Segal's character is in a stakeout and this malais just happens to be going on where they are. Segal breaks cover, and ruins the stakeout, to give the pimp a taste of his own medicine. He punches him up a bit then throws him through a car window, the frame pauses, and the character's name is overlayed on screen....it's a great shot.
I love this kind of intro.
MTV films used it again in the film HUSTLE & FLOW.
It's a great homage to films of the Seventies.
The only ending credits I really remember and like, are those films that merely opened with a title and save an "intro" style sequence ("なんとかPresents....a なんとか Production.....Starring なんとか..." etc) for the end of the film.
GANGS OF NEW YORK is a good example of that.
I think you are very dedicated Rajio. Kudos
(I don't know what "Kudos" means, but it felt right to say it there...umm...OK....cheers then)
"I love the films that do credits while the film is actually starting"
Was a bit silly wasn't it. What I meant was usually films do a flashy intro sequence, then when all the names have been duely shown, the pace suddenly slows, and they do a zoom or something and you get placed into the opening shot of film itself.
What I wanted to say I liked there was those films that don't have an "intro sequence", just get right into it and credits are being shown as the film itself is in motion.
It's even better when they do freeze frames 70s style.
I have to agree with ... on that.
Credits at the beginning are better, because as they go through, they are like a prologue to the story you're about to see, and this might sound quite silly but it looks pretty.
(according to me at least)
the only final credits i like are the ones with extra footage added. Period
Hi guys,
I like to stay till the end of closing credits in Cinema, unless I'm bursting to go to you know where.
Maybe silly, but I feel I show some respect for film maker, everybody involved that way,so I love Jackie Chan's and any other film's out-takes idea, it's a bonus in the end.
I like good opening credits, too.
One of my all time favourite is For a few dollars more.
So which is your fav opening credits?
I'll still go with OUT FOR JUSTICE - just love it.
4> hello Mickey,
"Maybe silly, but I feel I show some respect for film maker, everybody involved that way"
yeah I have a lot of respect for you and Rajio, I think this is a real "film fan" attitude - I'm trying to train myself to watch credits until the end...it's good to learn who did what on a picture from the credits instead of just looking it up on IMDB all the time (which is what I do)
"One of my all time favourite is For a few dollars more. "
Hey there ...!
I would say... My favorite opening credits so far would be the ones from "The Hours".
I find the beginning classy, and so prologue-ish.
To me that's a good taste opening credits, not to mention the movie itself.
Now just for the record I usually leave the room once the movie is over (it doesn't include the final credits), however i stay if I see that something might appear at the true "the end". I get that impression when something is left inconclusive or there's too much mystery. You get that feeling too?
Only then... I stay.
