Why is it in America, if you insult an African-American or a Jewish person you are a racist, publicly ostrasized and lynched, whereas if you insult Asians you get away with "I didn't know, I am kinda sorry. It might happen again. HA HA"

The response from Rosie's camp for her clearly racist remarks, and as important remarks that clearly indicate she is ignorant, was to "calm down. Relax it was a joke"

If she had said, "In Africa they go unga bunga unga bunga Danny Devito, unga bunga, snap crackle pop, THe View" There would be no excuse for her, but since it was China it was OK. HA ha.

If she champions sensitivity to lesbians and minorities, then she should be sensitive herself. Ignorance<>Innocence. She should apologize sincerely instead of getting laughs for it.

Why is it that Asians in the US are really the marginalized minority?

I say "fuck that" Rise up to the man. We should go out in packs and randomly beat white people on the streets of New York so they fear Asians, much like how the white man fears the black man. We should stop doing their laundry and sell them food in our delis. We should have our own militant groups. Malcolm X? no, no, no, Eugene Y. We will be the white man's lap dog no longer. In the words of the late great Chris Farley... "Kill Whitey!" You know what, just kill Rosie, it's a start.

I'll stop now.

My point is Asians need to be more aggressive and less passive in terms of racism and racists. We should embrace our status as a minority and work the political angle and make a fuss whenever things don't go our way. There are not enough Asians who do that.

I have stayed from my point, I am sorry. The original point was Rosie is a racist, and she needs to be shot.

Michael Richards- the new voice of he NAACP!

This reminds me of the time she humiliated Tom Seleck on public TV because he was in the NRA ( National Riffles Association) which really makes her a true hypocrite since she was making commercials for Kmart, who sell lots of guns, or was it Walmart? Anyhow I agree with you.
This is old news... but I agree, Rosie is a hypocrite, racist, and on top of that, a pathetic, washed-up comic. She is NOT funny and I've never found her entertaining.

In some respects, I think her non-apologetic "apology" pissed me off even more than her original remarks.

A Chinese American rapper released a pretty funny diss track in response to her comments using Nas' "Ether" beat. I got it linked up right here:

you can check out the clip of Rosie's racist remark on youtube. i particularly like the way Hot Air presented this!

Cohiba, I honestly think You went to far with your remarks, Although I understand what you mean, but why fight racism with racism. She's old, not funny anymore, and I honestly think she's just saying anything to get some attention, I don't know if you watch the view so often, but They talk about all races on that show, especially when Star Jones was on. Being that I'm black, and Mormon, I deal with a lot of remarks, But they don't affect me, their usually meant to be jokes. And you know you're probably saying racist things as well, Everyone's a little racist.
Hmm if I checked my history books, black people never went around beating people up randomly, so maby thats not why people can t make fun of them...

Maby its because black people were and often still are viewed as less then humans. They were made slaves because of their differences. They weren t allowed to use the same water fountains until the 50s!

And today, blacks happen to be less welcome in the US then Asians and I ll bet anything are a lot poorer then asians.

So sorry about the double standard! There are historical and social economic reasons for it! Same thing goes for white people and Christians. You can get away with saying a little more against them then you can other groups, but I wouldn t go around saying they are oppressed.

And personally, I m down with any joke as long as it is said without the intention of hate, (and of course that it is excuted skillfully enough that it is obvious that there wasn t hate inspiring it).

So grow up Cohiba and take a joke. Life is too short to get so upset.
I went too far on purpose. I thought most people would pick up on that when I quoted Chris Farley and calling Michael Richards the voice on the NAACP, but some people lack a cynicism meter.

It is interesting and heartening to see that most chimed in with a sense that what was said was totally off the deep end, but addressed the points about Rosie.

I never liked her to begin with, as she is annoying and not funny, but adding to the fact that she is ignorant does not help. I still stand by my notion of shooting Rosie, not as a racial thing, but as a favor to the American viewing public.

As for those of you (Polaroidfades, you never cease to disappoint) who attack personally. Aren't you the one wasting time? Obviously enough people thought there was some point being made in my original post to offer some inteeligent feedback. YOU got stuck on the obviously over the top portion, and decided to attack personally, You just want to waste time, that's fine. BTW, I've heard you DJ, YOU SUCK, DORK! Learn the English langauge moron.
Superstar>Hmm if I checked my history books, black people never went around beating people up randomly, so maby thats not why people can t make fun of them...
> that was meant as a joke, a poor one at that a la Rosie,

Maby its because black people were and often still are viewed as less then humans. They were made slaves because of their differences. They weren t allowed to use the same water fountains until the 50s!
> is it just the blacks though? what about Chinese in the 1920's. they were not slaves, granted, but Asians were treated as sub-human as well.

And today, blacks happen to be less welcome in the US then Asians and I ll bet anything are a lot poorer then asians.
> well, then why are there more black politicians than Asian? There are plenty of rich blacks in the US as well. Probably more middle class Asians than blacks.

So sorry about the double standard! There are historical and social economic reasons for it! Same thing goes for white people and Christians. You can get away with saying a little more against them then you can other groups, but I wouldn t go around saying they are oppressed.
> I wonder why it seems to people that it is natural to have militant black groups while Asians can't be militant or vocal?

And personally, I m down with any joke as long as it is said without the intention of hate, (and of course that it is excuted skillfully enough that it is obvious that there wasn t hate inspiring it).
> Joke, yes. Ignorance, no. Rosie's response pissed me off more than the original joke. She trivialized the whole incident.

So grow up Cohiba and take a joke. Life is too short to get so upset.
> WOuld you be pissed if she used Africa as the example?
There is enough of an overlap between the two. With political power comes economic power and vice cersa.

You are obviously oversimplifying, but you think the global world order is OK the way it is?

Asians in the US might have economic power, but don't know how to use it. It might help the cause if there were more militant Asians to help their cause.

If everyone got down with the program nothing would change. Someone has to get pissed off and piss other people off enough to enact change.
Simon> You are an English teacher, a master of the English language, and the best you can do is dickhead? How creative! I bet all your students are dazzled daily by your witticisms.

Does your daughter know that you use this kind of language?
I'd just like to chip in and say I'd like to see Rosie O'Donnell shot too...

please.

(D.Trump said some funny, if crass, things about her recently too when they had their beef - among them I enjoyed "she's a fat cow" the most...childish etc but yes I enjoyed it....anyway, how many celebrities have we caught being bigots of late? Crazy...)
LoL, Then make a militia...
Nothings stopping anyone from anything...

America is funny like that, there is some sort of "Initiation" before a race can be accepted into American society.. The Racism extended all the way back to White Folks hating White Folks just because they were Irish and not Scottish, French not German.. Christian not Mormon..

America is full of good ol' fun Racism..

In fact, I remember at my friends High School where all the blacks got to gather and beat the living shit out of every Asian and Asian sympathizer.. Male or Female, Didn't matter...
(The Black Club and the Asian club had a huge fight during their assembly. So the blacks took it out on any Asian/Asian Sympathizer they saw after the assembly)

Isn't blind racism great?

Isn't humanity the greatest thing in the world?

No matter how racist you may be, our blood is all the same... We are all still part of the same Race. With the same blood and same Origins..

And do please shoot Rosie, just seeing her bothers me... Well your at it, please take out Martha Stuwert, her cooking shows are horrible..

btw, Rosie is a Celebrity and rich.. So she feels she can say whatever she wants and get away with it.. If i were to make such a Comment in my High School I'd probably have 2,000 Asians waiting for me after school.. (75% of my High school population was Asian)
ha ha ha. thanks for seeing me dj. i am glad you made me even richer boy. how come you came?is SMAP too old for your taste now you monkey boy. by the way look at your racist remarks and then you will know why the personal attack asstroll. racism exists because of assholes like you
Fuck man...
A white person makes one fuckin mistake and every other race wants to pounce on them...
Try dealing with the burden of one wrong word at the wrong moment fucking up your entire life then bitch...
Yeah what she said was stupid...
But it's completely retarded to say she should be shot for it...
Tell you what when someone does it, maybe they should trace it back to you making that statement...
Then you try to argue that it was just a stupid thing and you didn't really mean it...
But chances are you could get away with it because you're not white and therefor couldn't harbor any hateful or racist opinions...
One of the biggest problems in America isn't the racist WASP...
It's the reverse descrimination, which wether you realize it or not puts "minorities" in control of the the white population...

Shit i'm almost afraid to post this, because a white person claiming that they're persecuted is just plain rediculous to every other race...
I'm sure i'll be flammed for it... and probably have a bunch of warnings against my account...
Try living with that....
Fuck here I want to go somewhere else in the world and teach...
To help others better their lives...
One day maybe i'll make a bad joke and i'll be blacklisted as anti-asian...
Again... you don't have to worry about being anti-WASP...
What would you know...
Come on boys and girls, grow up and let's start acting like adults now. It doesn't matter if you're black, white, yellow, brown, green, blue, pink or covered in polka dots or stripes; we're all human (to some extent) and should stop worrying about something as petty as skin colour. Racist attitudes come from a lack of education. I don't know who this Rosie O'Donnell is or what remarks she made, but if they were racist she should be shown that her comments were out of order and apologise for them. Shooting her is way over the top although I can understand the feeling.

That's my two yen.
>Cohiba
Quote:
BTW, I've heard you DJ, YOU SUCK, DORK! Learn the English langauge moron.

It seems you monkey boy are the one who needs to learn the english language. hahahahaha you tried to be smart and you got f**cked in the ass troll.
God Bless Rosie O'Donnell. Probably she was talking about asians like you
How did this whole conversation turn into Blacks & Asians? I honestly think there are other races that can be addressed, although I understand where you are coming from using those two races. but remember, Blacks and Africa have nothing to do with eachother, black people you can say are almost an alien race, We aren't always accepted in the US, and We don't know anyone from Africa, Black people's ancestors were brought here, and raped by the whites to create Black people. Living in San Diego, there is a pretty good amount of Africans, but most of them won't accepted Black people. A somalian teenager came up to my family to tell us that he was ashamed of our color!

And Being that there are so little asians in The United States, how do you expect them to have a lot of power when most of them are recent immigrants who barely speak the English language? I'm not canning the asian race, I'm just thinking of the San Diego Asian population where at my middle school there were 3 asians in total, 1 Native American.

You can't see that Native American becoming President, can you?
I guess the OP (Asstroll) realised once again that his remarks made him look more racist than O'Donnel hereself. Secondly you must be a pretty lowlife piece of shit to watch trash Tv like that. Thirdly he always makes racist remarks as far as I remember him being on this forum. I am sorry I did not want to offend anyone else thats why I was addressing myself personally to him. You want to challenge my english yet my friend I speak Japanese probably better than your own parents do and that is my 3rd language. Anyhow that is not the main topic of the conversation. I do swear I will beat the living shit out of you if you ever had the balls just to express yourself like that in public. Obviously once again you went back to the cave you are staying and hiding out of embarassment since the very own topic you started about racism was topped by your own racist remarks about Whites as you call them. Obviously you do not have suffiecient education to understand the world. Whatever you say personally against me has no grounding my little friend. You have offended people a handful of times before saying Japanese girls who go out with foreigners are whores and stuff like that. Honestly I would give anything to see you in front of me and make sure you will be shitting teeth for a week after our encounter. You seriously have the honor to be the greatest idiot I have met in the world. And yes I am serious about that.O'Donnel is trash TV and It was not that racist my friend lets face it. Was a mere joke and obviously some poeple found it offending. I can recall japanese people faking Gaijin looks or accents or so many things on TV every week but nobody says shit. So put the finger up your ass and enjoy boy.
>One of the biggest problems in America isn't the racist WASP... It's the reverse descrimination, which wether you realize it or not puts "minorities" in control of the the white population...

Oh boy... there's a real can of worms. So the REAL problem with racism in America is with "minorities" who are in control of the white population, huh?

Yeah, that's right... it's the fault of all us minorities that racism exists and that an entire system of privilege exists in America to benefit a single group of people. Oh yeah, us colored people are in TOTAL CONTROL! YEAH! (/sarcasm)

More complete details why Rosie is on a lot of folks' sh*t lists:

Part of the controversy has to do with not only her original "joke" (I use the term loosely), it has to do a lot with her initial response - at first, she and the show tried to completely ignore complaints (the show's e-mail address and contact information were temporarily removed from the website). When more viewers / groups started to complain (not just Asian American), her official response was along the lines of "You Asian people and other pople are too sensitive. You need to have a sense of humor and learn to understand my humor."

Only when several sponsors of the show got threats of boycotts from AsianAm groups did she finally make a statement on the show which basically amounted to "Oops, sorry... I thought my accent was funny. I'll probably accidentally offend you again in the future, but hey, it's unintentional!" It was a complete non-apology.

Add to the fact that she's a complete hypocrite in that she frequently has publicly accused people of homophobia and hating gay people... yet she still feels completely within her rights to be racist against Chinese people?

Yet another reminder of racist white privilege in America: Not only can you completely deny that something you did / said was racist, you can cast the blame for what happened on the person / people groups you wronged.
This thread reminded me of this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSCKDVq4ca4

Funny? Offensively racist? The laughtrack seemed to think it was funny.
was her only comment the "ching chong" thing?

yeah, her comment was VERY dumb and racist BUT it's not the worst thing in the world. It sounded more like she was making fun of asian languages. I'm sorry but TONS of ppl do that who are not asian because ppl are just DUMB like that (in fact, in america I don't even like to tell ppl that I like JPOP because people will usually reply with something like "so you listen to 'ching chong, ching chong, ying yang iiiiya!!!' it gets on my nerves how narrowminded and stupid ppl are.") It was dumb, I know but overreacting about it won't help anything. ppl say dumb shit about all races everyday but we can't worry about it all the time. All we can due is tell the person "shut the fuck up!" when we here a person nearby say something racist. To me, its a BIG problem when ppl die due to racism. That's when there should be a huge reaction.
A04, That was funny.. LoL...

Seriously, Gimi a break... People make jokes about every race.. What makes Asians any more special than any other race... I suppose if you started watching Mind of Mencia you'd probably think he's racist too!!

I hear people making White Jokes all the time on TV, doesn't bother me... Sometimes its even extremely hilarious..

I crack all kind of Racist jokes with my friends.. Then again, we are friends....
In fact, I don't think i could be-friend someone who was so easily offended but stupid stuff...

If you know it's not true... What's so offensive?
I was wondering if i could find this...

Talks about what Rosie Odonnell did..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qINiw6ub5U
mmm lets see here.
Randomly attack someone for the way they were born.
Look a black man, lets bash him. Oh he is white lets get him. ohh an asian by himself, do you stll have the cricket bat in the boot?
Thats not predjudice or bigotry at all.

Its fucked up what she said though. I hate that kind of bullshit.

I see that kind of stuff on Japanese variety TV all the time. Dissing

Blacks
Whites
Indians
Non Japanese Asians.

Seems the Audience loves it though.

Food for thought.
Of course people love it, other-wise it wouldnt be on TV..
And the original poster is still missing in action.
>One of the biggest problems in America isn't the racist WASP... It's the reverse discrimination, which whether you realize it or not puts "minorities" in control of the white population...

You know...
I could write a freaking book about how what you said was just completely wrong...
But I won't bother...
Because you’re the kind of person that creates problems for yourself.
You WANT white people to be racist…
It gives YOU someone to blame when you’re not satisfied with the condition of your life…
Because after all…
If it weren’t for the white people then you wouldn’t be where you are right now would you…

The whole point of what I said before was rather clouded, because to be honest I was pissed and if I had reread and rewrote it, it would have been much more articulate and to the point....
Which is simply this,
People are far too sensitive about what they consider "racist"...
But you can't deny a double standard...
When was the last time a prominent black, Spanish, Asian, ECT man was bashed on the daily news for cracking a racist joke about a white person?
Bashed to the point that he lost his credibility?
I challenge you to name 5 people...
Any race...
Multiple races...
I could go of forever about the negative side of affirmative action and how it's taken opportunities from more qualified canditites because schools or workplaces need to meet quotas...
How many middle class children will never be able to go to college, because it will simply be beyond their means and there's "no aid" for them, yet someone of a different ethnic group get's a free ride...
But both people have the same GPA, SAT scores... Their families make the same money...
Tell me how that's fair?
Tell me there are not double standards...
I'm not saying there are not racist people in the US...
What I'm saying, is it's not just white people...
Some might be...
But to be honest...
When was the last time someone else caught flak for being a racist idiot?
Think about that for a bit and tell me that people aren't overreacting just a little to a stupid comment from an equally stupid person...
And think about how you would react if something you meant as a joke, no matter how stupid, was turned around on you as a racist statement...
That because of it YOU should lose your job...
Your position...
Even your life...
All you were doing was making a joke, not intending to offend anyone…
Would your accuser then be overreacting?
Not if there's no double standards...
Totally off topic,
31>I went to the show because I got in for free. Got forbid I pay for crap like that. They should ahve paid me to go listen to that audible crap you DJ. I now know what a retard sounds like when he tries to spin. Actually I take that back. That is offensive to the mentally diabled. I could take you out with one thumb, but resorting to violence would just put me in the same ignorant moron that you are. You are a sad man who obviously has no life outside of mixi and keep responding to what you call meaningless crap I post. Get a life. Notice how no one is responding to you? No one cares about you. Go and play with your records a bit more, maybe you can learn something about DJing... ANd if I hear about you trying to beat anyone, no matter what race, I will make sure you egt kicked out of the country. Viooence is for the weak of mind.

24> I am not an idealist, as tht takes too much time, but I don't mind inspiring idealists to try to make the palce a better world. LEt them do all the work. :)

35> I don't think that Asians are any more special. However, I think that Asians should be moer cognizant of racist remarks since for some reason the general feeling is that it is a little more OK to mock Asians whereas the same joke towards blacks would be considered offensive. What is Rosie did the same skit but used an African nation instead of China. YOu would have an uproar, rightfully so as well. Rosie would probably not substitute an African nation into her skit, she would not dream of it.

30> It is not about black vs. Asian, but it seems that the poster boy fro minorities is the black man. YOu never see an Asian on CNN talking about racism, it is alwaya a panel of black people and the token Hispanic. Asians seem to be the neglected minority. Whenever the discussion come up about race relations it is black vs. white. Blacks have been the focus becuase they are vocal, they have a more "militant" vocal group. THey have risen up to make a stand to help define what is offensive to them and will not tolerate it. Asians need to be the same way.

40> Affirmative action is unfortunate but was never intended to be racist or the result of ignorance.
THe affirmative action you speak of is against Asians too. Many of the top schools limit the nubmer of Asian students as there would be too many of them for the schoool to be properly diversified.

>When was the last time someone else caught flak for being a racist idiot?
I think a lot of Koreans get flak for not serving the black community. On the flip side, Blacks have been known to target Korean businesses during riots.
>And think about how you would react if something you meant as a joke, no matter how stupid, was turned around on you as a racist statement...
That because of it YOU should lose your job...
Your position...
YOu obviously don't work in an organized institution. One would never joke about things like that at a bign firm. You would get fired, and rightfully so. Most firms have a zero tolerance policy.
40>You WANT white people to be racist…
It gives YOU someone to blame when you’re not satisfied with the condition of your life…

That's right, every colored person in America wakes up every morning and says, "Gosh, I hope every white person in America is racist!" Including me! Because only God knows how much easier my life is with racism! Hurray! (/sarcasm)

I have nothing against white people... you're the one who seems to have concocted the idea based on the fact that I've criticized Rosie.

However, I do having something against white people who are racist. I'd rather they not be racist.

>Because after all…
If it weren’t for the white people then you wouldn’t be where you are right now would you…

Are you trying to imply that I owe something to all white people? Some great debt?

Hmmm, yes, I should bow down to white people and show some gratitude! After all, if it wasn't for a combination of their grand "colonization" of the world, large sales of opium to China, their inventive genocide of the indigenous peoples of North America, and their desire to have my great-grandfather build their railroad for mere pennies and then the exclusion of my entire ethnic group from immigrating, I'd never even consider my life to worth jack squat! (/sarcasm)

You make me laugh.

>People are far too sensitive about what they consider "racist"...

Ah, the old argument that people are just being "too sensitive". The next time I watch some unfortunate soul get harassed with their attacker yelling racist slurs, I'll tell the victim, "Hey, don't be so sensitive! Racism is just in your imagination!" (/sarcasm)

Racial slurs and racial jokes like "ching chong chinaman" are more than just words. Words reflect attitudes, and the attitude often behind jokes like that are that people being made fun of are lesser peoples, and that they can be made targets of mockery simply for the fact that they are "the other". Jokes and slurs are the means by which we can strip "the other" of their humanity, and when we no longer believe in another person's humanity, terrible things happen. History has yet to prove otherwise.

But let's get to the real issue: maybe you'd rather us ethnic folks not be so sensitive so that you can have a free pass when you make a cultural faux pas or have a slip of ignorance? God forbid you'd actually have to learn how to properly interact with people different than yourself!
44 > That's right, every colored person in America wakes up every morning and says, "Gosh, I hope every white person in America is racist!" Including me! Because only God knows how much easier my life is with racism! Hurray! (/sarcasm)

I didn't say every one...
When I said YOU I meant YOU...
Not a racial group...
But you as an idividual...
I've seen you're post in other topics and no matter what the initial subject you manage to push the same agenda...

"Hmmm, yes, I should bow down to white people and show some gratitude! (/sarcasm)"

Great job on once again successfuly twisting my words!
I tell ya you're an excelent spin artist...
But in effect you proved my point..
I bet anything you'd never accept personal responsibility for your current possition in life and you proved me right...
I never suggest you owed anyone gratitude...
Only that with some degree of effort and desire anyone can create opportunity for themselves...
Or you can sit around and blame "the man" and all his evil acts throughout history for "keeping you down"...
Perhaps I should take after you and make a special note after a sarcastic statement...
Because i'm not sure you get it otherwise...

"Ah, the old argument that people are just being "too sensitive". The next time I watch some unfortunate soul get harassed with their attacker yelling racist slurs, I'll tell the victim, "Hey, don't be so sensitive! Racism is just in your imagination!" (/sarcasm)"

Yes in that particular context it IS racism and it's sad that it happens to anyone and for any reason...
The problem is that frequently people want to take something competely out of context...
A stupid joke is not a racially motivated crime...
It's just that, a stupid joke...
And beyond that, there seem to be people that go out of their way to fabricate racial infrences from something completely out of context...

As for what you call the "real issue"...
I simply want everyone to be held accountable for their actions...
Not just a select group of people...
I don't use racial slurs or ethnic jokes...
I'm uncomfortable with people who use them around me and far too politically and socially aware to use such terms or jokes myself at all...
Yet I can't get past the fact that a white person who says the dreaded "N Word" is attacked...
But a black person can use it as a casual greeting?
How bout the fact that no one bats an eye at terms like "Kracker", "Ghostface" and the ever so classic "Whitey"?
Do you mean to tell me that those terms aren't demeaning?
And what can I do about it?
Nothing... because that's one of those faux pas you're talking about...
No way a white person could possibly try to defend himself against racist statements, because some one would just make them look equally racist themselves...
I've seen that happen personally many times...
Even had a neighbor who lost her job because someone made a false accusation about her...
But then i've also seen people try to claim that another black person was racist against black people...

As I said before, I'll never claim that no white person is racist...
But again...
You can find racist in all shapes and colors...
And it's equally ugly, no matter who their unearned angst is forced apon...
And while history is important...
A lot of the problems of the past NEED to stay there...
Otherwise the guilt of mulitple generations is piled onto the next...
We as human beings really need to learn from the mistakes of the past, but also, to let go of anger and hate over time, instead of passing it on to the next generation.
They'll have their own mistakes and their own burden to carry...
I appologize in advance for this example, because I realize what it can set off...
But my hope is that it makes my point and certain people will see taht point, rather than twist my words(in otherwords this isn't in defense of the topic I address)
But think in terms of American slavery...
How many americans can actually trace their heritage back that far? Even if they can trace it so far back, were they from the north or south?
Now think of what a vast amount of what we'd consider WASP moved here long after slavery was over and done with...
I myself can only trace my families history back a generation, maybe two on my grandfathers side, before I have to look to family overseas...
And to be honest, that's really the standard. There are few if any "original" american families...
The point i'm trying to make is this, the collective guilt of the entire african-american slave trade is hung over a very broad group of people...
Namely... All white people...
Wether self imposed or placed there by others, it simply is...
Yet I don't know a single person who's family ever owned slaves...
Like myself their families have probably only been in this country for 2 or 3 generations...
And suppose you find a family who CAN trace their roots back to slave owners...
Is it fair to hold them responsible for it?
I'd say no...
It was a terrible thing, but really it's a mistake of the past...
So take from that...
Make sure it's not repeated...
But let go of the anger...
Because it's not the burden of todays generation to bear..

The disasterous results of forcing a young generation to take the blame for past mistakes has also been shown throughout history...
For instance, the case of the german guilt clause after WW1...
The allies(sans america oddly enough) forced germany to accept coplete responsibility for the whole cost and whole blame of that war...
Despite the many factors that lead to it's escilation...
And the recklessness with which they took and divided the most fertile and valuable land from the defeated people...
Because they were expected to bear a sort of national guilt, the younger generation was easy to coax into rebelion against their accusors...
And you get the even great disaster that was WW2...
Like I said...
Learn from the mistakes of the past,
But let go of the anger and don't look to place blame....
Because clearly it doesn't help...
--------------------------------------------------------------
Strictly on the Rosey subject...
She should be fired...
This isn't the first time that she's done or said something stupid...
And chances are it won't be the last...
And I personally think she's an idiot...

>I never suggest you owed anyone gratitude...

You wrote these exact words:

>Because after all…
If it weren’t for the white people then you wouldn’t be where you are right now would you… (post #40)

And that doesn't strike you as offensive? In the context of this topic, you seem to imply that because I owe something (they put put me where I'm at, right?) then criticizing a public figure like Rosie is off-limits.

I can see the point you're trying to make about "forgiving the past", but in the context of any complex issue, especially racism, the history has to be examined to give the issue context. People can't learn from the mistakes of the past if they're not talked about and people are left uneducated about them.

Besides, if you want to talk about "forgiveness", who possesses the right to forgive? The victim or the perpetrator? If I attack a stranger on the street, stab them repeatedly with a knife, and then take the knife out of their bleeding body, is it my right to say to the person, "Hey there, buddy! You ought to forgive me, I just took the knife out!"

To people who lack context or perspective on the issue, they may think it's just a harmless joke when Rosie said "ching chong ching chong" - but for those that understand the history of the phrase, the slur is deeply rooted in America's history of racist anti-Chinese, anti-Asian rhetoric and mocking of Asian cultures. If you don't believe me, Google the history of Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, and "Ching Chong" - you'll find this little gem of American music:

"Way out in old San Fran, there is a Chinaman
Who's known for miles around;
Wonderful place he keeps, down where he eats and sleeps,
Way underneath the ground!
Each night the festive chinks come there to wink and blink,
And dream away the hours.
They sing this funny song while they are borne along
On beds of poppy flow'rs:

"Ching, Chong, Oh Mister Ching Chong,
You are the king of Chinatown.
Ching Chong, I love your sing-song,
When you have turned the lights all down;
Ching Chong, just let me swing long,
Through the realms of Drowsy Land;
Dreaming while stars are beaming,
Oh Mister Ching Chong, sing-song man."

When you're in Frisco Town don't fail to drop around
And see this Ching Chong man.
Wonderful things you'll learn down where the torches burn,
He'll show you all he can.
Then when the time is ripe he'll fill your little pipe
And then a light he'll bring.
Gently you'll float away far out on Slumber Bay,
And softly you will sing:

"Ching Chong, Oh Mister Ching Chong,
You are the king of Chinatown.
Ching Chong, I love your sing-song,
When you have turned the lights all down;
Ching Chong, just let me swing long,
Through the realms of Drowsy Land;
Dreaming while stars are beaming,
Oh Mister Ching Chong, sing-song man."

^This was even a song recorded in 1917, that was co-written by Ted Baxter and Max Kortlander. "He'll fill your little pipe"? Hardly the most positive reference. And Rosie is just another in a long line of people who think it's funny to crack jokes about "chinamen".

But I digress.

If you got some sort of personal vendetta against me, send me a note rather than going off-topic. The issue of this topic is Rosie's comments AND her behavior when people reacted to her comments... don't use it as a forum for your random tirades of "reverse discrimination" or "white population being controlled by minorities" or your so-called "free ride" of affirmative action or the collective guilt of slavery. Start another topic if you want to talk about those subjects.
If you can't see that the statement in post #40 I made was sacrastic then I suggest you go back and read it as such...
As far as any personal vendeta...
I don't hold any.
I will however defend myself and my statements when they're twisted to cast me in a negative light...
And the way you presented and attacked my statements, all but accused me of being just as racist...

As far as my "tirades"...
I think my statements fall right into place in this topic...
Because the political significance of what she said as being a racial slur is vast...
Let's set aside the topic of the collective guilt of slavery(as I knew even as I posted it that that was as you've said "a can of worms")...
I at least have a feeling you understood the point I was trying to make there...
Simply that guilt has to be let go at some point...
Looking at history you can probably find many other examples of the ideals of a small group of people being transfered over to the general population from which they came...
And yes, political savy is a must when approaching such topics...
That said...
My attitude is not that Rosie didn't say something stupid...
It's that it should only have been looked apon as such stupid...
Not with such a huge amount outrage...
This should not have been international news...
By reacting in such a manner you only give power to nothing more than words...
If you choose to lose respect for her because of her actions than more power to you...
I lost respect for her a long time ago for her overly zealous claims that certain people were anti-gay...
And her latest mistake only serves to furture my lack of respect and certainly support for her...
The only evidence you seem to be able to muster is a song written nearly 100 years ago...
And an act that's even older than that...
But you don't seem to take into account the vastly different social and political standards of today...
I also don't really like your analogy in determining who has the right to forgive...
But as it's the one you choose I'll run with it...
No you have no right to demand forgiveness...
Nor can you really forgive yourself untill your victim does of his own accord..
Which is the problem...
If people can't let go of the weight that some words and phrases carried in the past...
And allow themselves to be so outraged by something that clearly does nothing but show anothers lack of education or intelligence(in this case Rosie)...
Then they only serve to increase the power of those words over time...
And it could be said that the original offenders are still awaiting forgiveness..
Where then does that leave the decendents of the long gone offenders?
I'm not saying that the weight those words USED to carry should be completely erased from the current geneartions mind...
That goes back to the statement I made about learning from history...
However if there is every going to be a solution to the problem of racial prejuice...
Then everyone needs to learn to recognize the differences between the past and today...
And to take the power away from those words...
I'm sure most people are familar with the term "there's no such thing as bad publicity"...
In the long run, the public outrage will probably just help Rosie's career...

Lastly...
I'll grant you that perhaps I examine certain examples too vigorously, but only in hopes of making a better connection, or finding just the right way to make my point more clear...
I've never brought any subject up simply the purpose of misdirecting a discussion...
I do so because everytime a public figure is cast into the spotlight for soemthing like this, there seems to be an immediate tendency by world media to spin the situation and make it a much bigger story than it needs to be...
They're quicky followed by special interest groups and indiviuals that jump at the chance for free publicity...
Which only serves to make it a bigger issue...
All this is at the cost of the American people...
It cost us, in that Rosie's stupid joke could now define some individuals idea of what an American is, does and how we think...
You or I could one day be judged by a complete stranger, based on what some idiot said on a talk show...
Tell me prospect doesn't scare you...
One last update to the topic...
