I have a female friend who loves Canadian guy.
She has known him more than 1 year now.
He lives in Canada and sometimes have a chance to come here in Tokyo for business trip.
They met several times already.
He has never told her "I love you" or "I need you".
But he call her "Sweetheart".
So she misunderstood his meaning on this.
He just wanna have fun with her, on the other hand, she didn't.
She already fell in love with him at that time.
After he left Tokyo, she mailed to him and he told her, "I start up with my ex-girlfriend".

Now question, what's a difference between "Sweetheart" and "Girlfriend".
It depends on the situation, when they use or something elese?
How can we recognize it from the word?
It's very hard for me to read this meaning...
I cannot explain to my friend.

Girlfriend is used for a girl who a guy(or a girl, if she is bi) has commitment as BF&GF (or GF&GF) with.

People use "Sweetheart" to their GFs or BFs or whatever, but also it can be used just as a "pet-name" as baby or cutie.
>>Kay
thanks,so "sweetheart" means not special for GF nor BF.
it's clear.
from now on,i take care to treat the meaning....
ok, i'll tell her the difference.

as for baby, honey, also have same definition?

i think native speakers often use "sweetheart", "baby"
or "honey" for just a friend.
Even my female friend sometimes calls me "sweetheart".
so it may be confusing...
but i guess it could be recognized by feelings between a guy and a girl... not by calling sweetheart...
I think so too.
Native use "sweetheart","baby"or"honey" for just a friend.
My BF use his best female friend "I love you" "xoxoxo" !!
I'm trusting him.
But for we Jpananese,it's diffecult to understand like that feeling or saying like that...

They don't have つきあう...
So,I also don't know really when I become his BF.
I read different topic like this.
And many of them didn't have like,,,つきあいはじめた日
So,very difficult.

If your friend can speak English well, then maybe she could understand his meaning or feeling.
But if not, include me, should take care.
Native men use sweet things naturaly.
悪気があっていっているわけではなく、文化の違い。
(悪気がある場合ももちろんあると思う。)
but if a guy calls a girl sweetheart and doesn't specify what he's actually doing with her, then he's obviously an ass, especially if he was having sexual relations with her. in which case, he just wanted to get laid.
>>NALU,みんみん
The difference of culture...
Recognizing from feeling makes some troubles, if they have different feeling.

>>Aha
I guess he is one of asshole guys, and unfortunately she is one of victims of them.
Whatever they say, asshole guy is always like this.
this type of guys take advantage of culture difference.
Yeah guess so. Some ppl use baby or honey to just a Some ppl use baby or honey to just a friend or acquintance, more over a girl in a bar. Others never use these kinda words.
皆様、ありがとうございました。よくわかりました。
気をつけて聞かないといけないってことですね。
