The Screwgun Story
I started Screwgun in fall 1996 after the demise of the JMT label. In addition to the nine recordings on JMT, I also had also made two for
CBS, one for Minor music which were most probably out of print by this time. So it seemed like a good time to start a label to regain control of my work, to provide a destination for people to find my catalog, and to establish a direct means of communication with my audience.
Since 1996 the Screwgun imprint has released 14 discs, several by my different bands, and also albums by Marc Ducret, Michael Formanek, Django Bates, plus a re-issue of a classics Julius Hemphill solo recording. My company is run solely on funds generated by CD and score sales.
Along the way I have been assisted by the incredible designer Steve Byram (who has been responsible for my covers over the last 19 years)
and the extraordinary talents of David Torn who has not only mastered most of the recordings but also recently mixed and produced several discs.
