(former called ///▲▲▲\\\ or V O I D to those who can’t read triangle language ) who comes from the creeping movement of Witch House (also referred to as Ghost Drone, Haunted House, Drag) that typically mixes dark synth pop, distorted samples, slow paced dub and a characteristic gothic, haunted ambience. This is a genre that is very experimental and while all the bands carry a distinct “sound” no two bands sound exactly a like and Horse MacGyver is definitely one artist to check out.
Under his previous alter ego V O I D, Horse MacGyver released CDR, which will definitely resonate well with existing fans of the Witch House genre. Track “Rub” is this gritty down tempo electro beat mixed with ominous, industrial sounds and spacey sounding high pitched synth tunes that creates the feeling of being on a cold spaceship or haunted boat engine room. “Smiley” uses this rattling, almost like hot water pipes steaming, sampled over a down beat synth mixed with a high pitched kind of dark 8-bit video game sound. CDR definitely is a solid listen but it’s the Horse MacGyver EP Void Tape that really shines through (and the better of the two releases for those new to the genre).
Void Tape takes the best tracks from CDR “Spit Shine”, “Beta Tape Warp” (phenomenally sounds like a ghost has gotten hold of the equipment), and “Tetanus Wine”, that are each are equally different and sick but it’s that first track “How They Kill You” (fantastically mixes industrial sounds with amazing creepy organ music and this distorted haunted voice, yelling and almost screeching at times) that really sets Void Tape apart and creates an extremely well rounded, truly experimental EP. Horse MacGyver’s music only gets better when paired with visuals so definitely give videos of “Rub” and “Spit Shine” a watch
