In his early teens, hip-hop and electro provided the entry point for UK DJ/producer Paul Mac to electronic music. Mac got his own decks and learnt the tricks of the trade.
After hip-hop and electro, Paul listened to early Detroit techno and the raw, jacking acid sounds of Chicago.
Paul spent the first five years of the 90s perfecting his DJing craft before deciding to pursue his passion professionally.
Mac moved into production in the mid 90s and bought the necessary studio equipment to get started.
A year later, after finding his feet in the studio, he started the arduous process of trying to get his music signed ‘the old fashioned way’, by mailing out demos to labels.
Paul’s music came to the attention of Josh Brent (of Schatrax fame) who was running the now defunct dance distributor As It Is. Brent suggested that Mac start his own label under the As It Is umbrella and Stimulus was born.
This imprint gave Paul the outlet to put out his dance floor techno under a wealth of guises.
Paul Mac is a prolific artist so It’s no surprise then that he has managed to record as Pablo Fuddrucker, Jorge Zamacona, Herman Funker, Eddie Fiola, Ralph Farquar, Arty Gruber and Quentin Garlic.
Mac has also released on an exhaustive list of labels – with Bush, Speaker Attack, Primary, Bush, Phont, Ongaku, Immigrant, Surface, Mosaic and Pure Plastic all releasing his work.
In recent years, Paul has given up nearly all of his colourfully named guises and only works under his own name or as Jorge Zamacona.
In 1998, Mac consolidated his varied styles – minimal, tech-house and deep Detroit techno as well as a smattering of electro - on his debut album, ‘Old School Former Pupil’. Spanning eleven tracks, the depth and breadth of the album was reinforced by the way Mac linked each tune with a jazz-funk interlude. As first long players go, it was a huge critical success.
Apart from a release on Native, the outlets for releasing deep techno became scarce as the 90s progressed and tougher club music became Mac’s preferred style.
Releases on Primevil, Primate and Ben Sims Ingoma and Theory labels’ consolidated Mac’s reputation as an expert in the club techno field – and his three deck hip-hop style spinning style has seen his DJ schedule increase in recent years.
Currently a resident at Sims’ Retrovert parties in London, this past year has been Mac’s busiest behind the decks – and he has played in Spain, Hungary, Columbia, Brazil, Serbia, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Germany, Slovenia and Japan - where he played at the Wire Festival, with about 22,000 people in two rooms – and people like Jeff Mills, Hell, Alter Ego, Chris Liebing, Westbam and Ellen Alien on the bill.
Somehow, Mac has also finds the time to remix many of his peers, including Vince Watson, James Ruskin, Hardcell, Rue East and Don Williams.
He is also gearing up for the twentieth Stimulus release, which will feature tracks from Ben Sims, James Ruskin, Ben Long, Oscar Mulero and Mark Williams – which will be promoted by an extensive tour. Mac is also focusing again on his C-side label, an outlet he set up two years ago to focus on sample-based DJ tools, while one of his tracks also features on Jeff Mills’ new mix CD / DVD, out next year.
Away from the dance floor, 2003 also saw Mac release the follow up to ‘Old School Former Pupil’. Like its predecessor, ‘Push Came To Shove’ on Primate was a varied work, alternating between old skool vocal acid, deep, glacial Detroit techno, jacking house, grungy electro, jazzy breaks and dense club music.
One the most varied electronic albums of 2003, Paul is puzzled by its success – because it wasn’t as dance floor friendly as his EPs – but says that he’s already working on the follow up long player.
