French fashion designer Pierre Balmain opened his haute couture house in 1945 after studying at Ecole des Beaux Arts and designing for Edward Molyneux and Lucien Lelong.In the same fashion league as Christian Dior and Cristobal Balenciaga, Balmain was revered for his elegant aesthetic toward design. “Dressmaking is the architecture of movement,” Balmain once said. His designs were known for opulence such as embroidered gowns and ensembles as well as their focus on cut and style. Today house designer Christophe Decarnin, who came on board in 2005 to revive the starry yet bankrupt brand, has infused the label with so much energy and brilliance that Balmain is one of the hottest names around. Decarnin, a couture-trained designer who previously worked at Paco Rabanne, is known for ultrahip, daring, and chic looks such as torn skinny jeans, thigh-grazing cocktail dresses, and bedazzled blouses. Celebrity beauties love his eye-catching looks Jennifer Connelly, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Gwyneth Paltrow, to name a few.
