Headed to the Lock Tavern in Camden knowing it would be a difficult one, I was right! It’s only a small place with a ‘regulars’ card system, that says it all really!
It’s a great way to keep all my friends out who have travelled to watch me! so spent the first half hour running up and down to get my friends in. Perhaps it’s me but I never get any sense of warmth in London - especially Camden shows. Direct contrast with anywhere else outside the M25. I went onstage feeling a little apprehensive, got some drinks tokens - played a few songs then finished.
My expectations are a little too high perhaps but again people were standing at the front of the stage shouting conversation at their friends…It’s something I hopefully will get used to. I want to play instores and libraries….or burn their ears with a snare drum and crash cymbal. Drum kits are great at shutting loud media types up! Anyway, met up with a few fans and some old friends which made up for the performance. Then off to Romford. Out of the frying pan…well kind of. It was dead, so I thought the best thing to do was to have a laugh and get everyone involved, my friend Ogidan was there so he played compare, the rest went steadily down hill.
The one saving grace was a duet of my single ‘horses’ with a musical friend of mine Mhazz, although I have to apologise. I always play it differently live to the recorded version, so it made for some interesting looks onstage, sorry Mhazz. Came home a little disappointed at what could have been a great evening, questioned if I really wanted to this as it can be an uphill struggle, I could just play drums and it’ll be easier and less demoralising I thought. But I can’t stop now, for every 5 shit gigs there’s a buzz around the corner. Fingers crossed for Paris. It would be far too easy to sit back and be comfortable in babyshambles, this roses thing has humbled me and forced me to go through all the bumps that every band and artist experiences, except for those lucky enough to have famous or wealthy relatives eh? I found out last night - perhaps it’s rubbish! but…a certain English band paid a certain well known music publication to put them on the cover.(30k). This is the reality of the music business, i hope not.
