Neon is an ambient/post rock electronic duet formed by Byron and Chris Setel; “Au theatre des sons imaginaires” comprises their first creation.
Their music forms an ambient, fragile and “misty” landscape with mostly aesthetic references to Fennesz, Biosphere, Colleen, My Bloody Valentine and Manual. They remain minimal through their melodic fragments and sound layers, orchestrating ethereal soul – defining routes. Characterized by the spirit of central European romanticism they create dreamy, melodic schemes, while at the same time they reflect contemporary urban environmental conditions. The sense they emit is the most abstract feeling of sound and a kind of blurred noise that leads their compositions.
Neon’s theatre of imaginary sounds unfolds a subtle and mature musical writing and an esoteric mood that is bound by an essential substance.

Rutger Zuydervelt, a man better known to the experimental music world as Machinefabriek is somewhat prolific; a fact you might have gathered from his steady flow of super-limited edition 3” cdrs which seem to slip out relentlessly month after month. American multi-instrumentalist Aaron Martin is possibly less productive only having one full-length album to his name so far, but he is no less intriguing and between them the duo have come up with a project which is far more than the sum of its parts.
The ‘Cello Recycling’ project was originally commissioned for use in an art gallery; Zuydervelt took cello improvisations from Aaron Martin and built them into the slow-burning post-ambient monster that is ‘Cello Recycling’. However here we see the original piece accompanied by Aaron Martin’s take on Rutger’s work, where he ‘drowns’ the original piece in a bath of murky water taking into submerged directions it has never before drifted. The two pieces together are perfectly complimentary showing two sides to a tarnished coin – one giving us pent up emotion, fizzing and shuffling awkwardly until it explodes majestically, the other giving us peaceful reflection as seen through the eyes of a serial killer who has just completed his final gift to the world. An inventive and incredibly beautiful look at the cello as an instrument and noise making tool; this is an absolute must for fans of post-classical music, the droning beauty of Stars of the Lid or even the moody post rock of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Moody, kinetic and hugely enjoyable stuff, this needs to be played loud and absorbed totally…

Frank Bretschneider / rhythm (Raster-Noton '07)
Probably Bretschneider’s most direct, clear and concentrated work yet, „Rhythm“ is neither pop nor avant-garde, but deals simply with the basic principles of any modern music: rhythm. A combina-tion of programming, composition and construction is connected with his very idiosyncratic aesthetic of digital sound but always stays emphatically musical and manages to generate sophisticated and complex rhythm-structures.

Signal / Robotron (Raster-Noton '07)
Raster-noton‘s flagship Signal – Olaf Bender, Frank Bretschneider and Carsten Nicolai – is something like the reference group of one of the pivotal labels of new minimal electronic music. The album joins the work of the three masterminds of raster-noton not like a simple aggregation of egos but rather like Signal would be a superego that serves a process in which the rule, coincidence and interaction play equal parts.

この'02の4月にUKのATPに行ってフェス観ちうか音楽観がけっこう変わったので
急激にフジに魅力を感じなくなったんだよなぁ
自分の音楽サイトを続ける必要も感じなくなったしね
なんだろ　マイナーミュージック愛好者の姿勢ちうかなんちゅーか
またもやアルビニによってね

なもんで6年ぶりだったのか　そりゃ印象も変わるよね　フジロック
初期のフジロックって初回のサイアクなスタートがあったせいで
妙な連帯感があったと思うんだよね　音楽ファンの良心に訴えかけるようななにかが
その頃のフジロックと比べると音楽好きっていうより
フェス好きの集いってカラーが強いカンジがしたなぁ
以前行ってた頃もフェスってやっぱ自分には合わないよなぁ
とは思ってたけど　それをいっそう感じたよ
やっぱ　根はハミ出し者だからなぁ　青空の下でロックなんてムリ

まぁでも
Killing JokeでもGang of FourでもCureでも行く気には結局ならなかったけど
My Bloody Valentineは行かねばなるまい　パパ基準で

さてと　なにから書こうかな
・MBVを知ったのは当時のバイブル小野島さんのミニコミNEWSWAVE
・初めて聴いたのはYou Made Me Realise
　当時の友人(NEWSWAVE愛読者)が東京遊びに行ったときに買ってすぐに
　感動して電話越しに聴かされる　全然聴き取れねーよ
・たしか　師匠久保田さんのNEWSWAVEのコーナー黒コートの部屋でも
　1回目に取り上げてたんじゃなかったっけ？
・んで自分でもYou Made Me RealiseとFeed Me With Your KissのEP入手
　完全にノックアウト
・そのうちIsn't Anything発売　日本盤で遅れて入手
　ライナーが今から考えると微笑ましかった記憶が　絶対売れないとかさ

う〜ん　このペースだと書くのめんどーだな　やめよう

とにかくLoveless以降　増殖しまくりのファンとか
過大評価って言葉がちらついたりとか
天の邪鬼な自分はすっかり大好きだったのを忘れてたよ

MBVとFUJIとパパ〜その2

それにしても　みんな大絶賛だね
あとみんな　表現力があり過ぎるよ　パパと比べると
他に言うことなんかないよ　とか思っちゃうよ

でも書く

さてと突撃だ　とばかりにステージ右側から前方に向かうも
フジのシステムを忘れたのか変わったのか　前方は柵で囲われてんだね
開始30分前くらい　出遅れたよ〜ん　とあせったけど
ステージ向かって左側からぐるっと回って入れるよ　と
たまたまそこで出会った　マイミクmakiさん＆みきこさんに教わる
一瞬　ちょっと離れたとこにいるツレ達と落ち着いて観ようかな
とも思ったけど　それはやっぱ一生後悔しそうなので却下　再突撃
まだ　その前方部分に入場規制はなくてホッと安心
遅れをとったけど強引に前方へ　7、8列目
ライブ開始直後の客の動きのスキをついて　さらに突進
ビリンダの向かってちょっと左　前から3列目に
以降　最初だけ押され気味だったけど　徐々に落ち着き
メンバー全員ちゃんと見える場所確保
それにしても　ビリンダのスクリーンのアップ
あの歳の女性の顔をアップで映すのはどうかと思うぞ

ん〜　さてと

再結成ライブってことで思い出し
人生のワーストライブであるBauhausの再結成ライブ
演奏自体は逆に安定してるくらいだとも思ったけど
ボーカルの声量がやっぱ全盛期に比べるとキツかったり
当時からライブはライティング含めてビジュアルのインパクトが強かったけど
アーティストちっくだったり胡散臭かったりなNew Wave臭が皆無に
エンターテイメント全開なショーってなカンジで
勝手な思い入れや自分のBauhaus像とのギャップのせいでガッカリ
まぁ　このライブの体験のおかげで
Echo＆The BunnymenとかNew OrderとかBig Blackとか楽しめたとも思うけどね

んで　MBVにボーカルの声量を期待するヤツなんて皆無だろうし
そもそもナニ歌ってるのか　とかさ・・・
Smithsを頂点として歌詞を一生懸命追っかけてた当時のパパ
だのにケビンったら
最高のドラッグはSEXだから僕たちはSEXのことしか歌わないんだよ〜ん(大意)
とかインタビューでほざいてたので(このインタビューも小野島さんのかも)
あ〜　もういいや　と歌詞の呪縛から解放されたんだよねぇ
その前後にテクノの波が来て　さらにその傾向は促進されちゃったけどね
で　今のインストポストロック好きにまで繋がる　と
おっと　脱線　脱線

で　MBVって今回のライブで痛感したけど職人なんだよね　音響の
アーティストとかミュージシャン的なモチベーションとかノリとかもろもろ
一切関係ないとこでライブやってる気がしたよ　まぁケビンが　だけど
なんかもう　いつライブやってもブレようがないのかもなぁ　スタイルが
だから当時と比べてほとんど劣化がない気がするよ　ホント
逆にすごいのは　当時からこれっぽっちも進化もしてないのに
ほとんど古臭く感じないとこだったり　なんなんだいったい

んが　やっぱ野外ってことで音量は不満だったねぇ
もっと爆音を期待してたけど　もう限界なんだろうなぁ
行く先々で難聴者続出なのに拍子抜けだったよ
それでも You Made Me Realise のノイズ部分は離脱者続出だったらしいけど

あと　フェスなんで時間の都合上しょうがないところもあるけど
セットリストが若干不満(ここんとこの彼等のセットリストと比べた上でね)
1曲目はOnly Shallowから始まらなかった　とか
Feed Me With Your Kiss と You Made Me Realise が続くのもなぁ　とか
やるかやらないかは五分五分だった Lose My Breath やらなかった　とか
まぁでも他にも Honey Power とか Sueisfine とかさ
やったら替わりにどの曲やらないんだ　と言われると困ったりするけどさ
当然そこで You Made Me Realise のノイズ部分・・・とかいうのはNGです
あれこそがMBVのライブのキモでしょう

スタジオ盤＞＞＞＞＞ライブ
なパパだけど　ライブじゃなきゃ伝わらないものがあるのも当然知ってますよ
そういうものを感じるライブも自分にとっては稀になりつつあるけどね
あのノイズの壁は　何十種類何百回と聴いたブートのライブでは分からない
全身で体感するライブじゃなきゃ絶対体験できないものだと断言できるしね
いやはや至福な時間でした
んで長年の謎だったので注意してたけど　ノイズから戻るとこ
どういうタイミングで合わせてるのか分からなかったよ　む〜ん

とにかく終わった後　ツレに向かって出た言葉は
爆音が足りね〜　ってのと
それでも生涯のベストライブかも〜　です

途中　何回か泣きそうになったよ
いやホントね　自分でも大好きだったの忘れてたんだよなぁ　当時から既に

と思ったら途中から曲順差し替え　当然のようにFollow The 〜だけ後回し
Who Told You How? は今までで初めて演奏するとか言ってた
1st2ndから　つっても全曲やるとは思わなかった　Exitとか聴けて嬉しかった
あれれ　アンコール用かと思ってた曲やっちゃった
Pssycheもやっちゃったからアンコール　曲ないじゃん　とかツレと

いろんな時期からの選曲なんで客のテンションがバラバラだったよ
ライブとしての出来は全然今日のほうが良かった
んが　MinistryみたいなPandemoniumの時期より(いやオリジナルなんだけどさ)
2nd以前のほうが1万倍好きな自分は昨日のほうが良かったです
ちうかPandemoniumの曲　覚えてないし　昨日は全曲イントロで分かったけど

あとなぁ　これをロックのライブっていうのはどうかとも思ったり
いやまぁ自分の中のロック幻想だけどね
カリメロ師匠が　再結成ライブは全てダメ　って切り捨ててたのも分かるしなぁ
そもそも　狭い意味での自分の中でのロックってもんが
もう必要ないリスナーだとも思ってたりもするしね
フツーに音楽として楽しんでいればいいんだけどさ
カッコいいライブだったんだけど　ちょっと気にしてたり
やっぱ思い入れはすごくある(あった)バンドだから余計に

それにしても　おばさん率が高いライブだった

20時からちょっと押してスタート
途中10分の休憩をはさみ2部構成　アンコールありで約2時間半
たぶんパパの人生で一番時間の長いライブだったような
指定席買えてよかったよ　立ち見だともうムリ　おじいちゃんです

いやぁ　鳥肌立ちまくり
信じられないくらい素晴らしいライブでした
誠実な音楽を続けるということ
インディペンデントで居続けるということ
初めてShellacのライブを観たときの感覚が蘇りましたよ
音楽性はまるっきり違うけどね
まぁ　なんかそういう幻想/物語にパパがめっちゃ弱いってのもあるけど
それを差し引いても素敵なライブだったんじゃないかと
絶対やらないと思ってたパパの一番好きな曲
Encantadaもやってくれて大満足
