☆ENGLISH ONLY☆コミュのWii, XBox, or PS3?

I've been feeling a lot of pressure from friends recently to get a game console. Initially I was thinking of getting a Wii, mostly because it's cheap and seems great for when you have people over. My other friends are telling me to either get an XBox or PS3; some say that XBox games are awesome, and other say that PS3 is the way to go (and has BlueRay as well).

Whatcha think? Is there a "best" console? Is a guy too "girly" if he goes with a Wii?

I don't know why anyone would think a Wii is "girly." I don't think I've ever heard that before, actually. I would not go with the Wii though. It's true, that the Wii is great when you have people over. But when you don't, it's not as great. Therefore, if you have a friend with a Wii, you might as well just go to his/her house and play it.

Now, over PS3 and Xbox...Even though PS3 has just dropped in price, it's still more expensive. Not to mention the Xbox 360 was released a while before the PS3, so the 360 has a lot more games for it, so at the moment, you're more likely to a wider variety of games you like on the 360 (and for cheaper) than on the PS3. However, the BlueRay capablity of the PS3 is pretty nice, and the PS3 is much cheaper than getting a regular Blueray player. Also, though it does not have as many games, the PS3 might be the better one in the future once the PS3 gets a better game selection. I'm not sure about the PS3's online capablities (almost no one I know has one because it's expensive and all the games they want that are on PS3 have also been released for Xbox), but the Xbox's works really well, and there are lots of accomplishments (little awards you get for doing certain things in any Xbox game) you can show off to your friends, and you can send them mail through it, etc.

So if I were personally going to buy one of the those, I would get an Xbox 360 for now, but in the future I might want a PS3, especially for Blueray. The wii...it's more of a multiplayer/party console, and I already have a friend who has it. There are some games for Wii I'm interested in, but almost all are multiplayer anyway.

(for the record, I don't have any of the current ones either. All Ihave right now is a PS2 and a Nintendo DS, and I'm playing on buying a PSP sometime this week).
If I had the salary of a physician as opposed to med student, I'd totally buy the PS3 -- great gaming capabilities, excellent price for a Blu Ray player (considering it's also a gaming system,) future library of games (Final Fantasy 13+,) and so forth.

Sadly, those luxuries escape me, so I, a very manly man, own a Wii. I guess I could enjoy Need for Speed Underground and 007 Casino Royale more with better graphics. However, I think for satisfying my gaming needs, as well as for providing tons of casual gameplay as well, a Wii is a solid investment.
Personally I think Wii does not even belong to a group of "next generation console", since it is not even high definition. (that is just my personal opinion)

I'm an xbox360 user, but I've always been hearing the issue of which console (the xbox or PS3) is superior to the other. There's not an objective conclusion to this of course, but here are some trends of the xbox console I can see as I've been playing:

・Xbox failure rate is rather high, some say that it's over 50%. In fact, my own xbox broke down after a year and a half of buying a brand new one, and had to have a whole motherboard and a DVD-drive replaced with a new one.
However, Microsoft has extended a year-warranty to three years (for the particular, mostly seen failure, called Red Ring of Death).

・As far as an online play, since PS3 is more popular than the xbox in Japan, you'll rarely see Japanese people playing on the Xbox Live (of course depending on your software) although the box has vastly huge share in the global market. I mainly play sports and racing games, but have never encountered a Japanese player online LOL
Let me remind you that for playing online on the Xbox LIVE costs you about 4500 yen for 13 months, on the otherhand PS3 Network is free meaning you can play online games for free.

・The cost of developing an software is a lot cheaper and less complicated for the xbox, hence the game developers tend to distribute softwares for the console, and since also the xbox has a LOT bigger share in the global market, meaning more sales worldwide. That is why even Japanese developers like Capcom and Namco Bandai are investing more on developing softwares for the xbox.

・My xbox freezes a lot during play. However any next-gen consoles could have a lot of glitches and failures, since they're very delicate.

As far as Wii, it would be better for you if you just want to play with your family and friends as a recreation and have fun as if you're having a party.
but if you want to play with down to earth graphics on a high definition TV, Wii is not an option.
Now that the new PS3 version is coming out soon for less than 30,000 yen, it's really up to you to decide which console is better. Both consoles are good, so maybe looking at softwares that are PS3 exclusives and Xbox exclusives and comparing them might be a way.
Are there region encoding issues that crop up? (Meaning, can I get a non-Japanese game to work in a Wii/XBox/PS3?)
I've always been a Nintendo person so my bias generally
leans in the direction of the Wii. I think the PS3 is way too
expensive but Xbox was manufactured by satan. If it was
a choice between the 2 I guess I'd probably lean towards
the PS3 based purely on the blue ray component. But if
you can live with the limitations I think the Wii is great
fun.
There's nothing girly about the Wii.....I play the toughest
games.....like Harvest Moon.....OK maybe it is a little girly
but if you want hot girls to come to your party get the Wii. If
you want guys with pimples and hygiene issues get the
PS3.
I actually have a PSP as well which is a pretty good gaming
option if you want something to pass the time with.
千望詩, Today is your day for electronics huh? ウッシッシ First with the HDTV thread, and now this.

I don't consider myself a hardcore gamer, but I do own a Wii and a 360. Others have already mentioned that a Wii is good for when you have friends over, or if you have a family, and that the 360 and PS3 are great for online gaming. The Wii is great when I want to play with my wife, or if I have a friend and his kids over. However, the online portion of the Wii leaves a lot to be desired.

Since you live in Japan, you'll find that the majority of Japanese people own a PS3, but Microsoft did take a little chunk out of that pie with the 360. Recently there isn't much in the way of exclusivity, meaning that games are "usually" released on both the PS3 & 360, or all of the 3 consoles. Pricing will most likely become a non-factor with the rumors that PS3 will be reduced in price come Sept. So you're now left with the choice of how important online gaming is to you, or if you need extra clarity with Blu-Ray movies. The Wii initially costs less, but if you want extra remotes and nun-chucks, the total price can quickly even up with the 360 & PS3.

With the PS3 & 360, if you're gaming online and you find you enjoy talking or playing with someone you just met, it's very easy to add them to your friend list and keep in touch with them. With the Wii that's pretty much impossible. However, with the ease of online gaming for the 360 & PS3, you also get all the A'holes, racists, sexists, bigots....etc. It's easy to mute them, but they can just as easily send you hate messages. (I'm a white American, but apparantly just because I live in Japan, I'm now a lesbian ch*nk...go figure) With the Wii having friend codes, theoretcially you can only play with people you have exchanged your codes with, but people have gotten around this (on mixi as well), by making forums for people to exchange their codes for each game. I'm not sure about the PS3, but with the 360 you can immediately see what your friends are online, and what games they are playing, making it easy to join them whenever you want. With the Wii you have no way of knowing what game they're playing unless you load each game, and they happen to be playing the same game.

The 360 (PS3?) also has game demos you can download, to try out games before you buy them, the Wii only offers SOME DS game demos. None for the Wii from games what I have seen.

The 360 is famous for the RROD (Red Ring of Death), but ever since Microsoft began making the consoles late last year with different processors, there have been less reports of the RROD. I've had mine for almost a year now and it hasn't failed on me yet. So if you do get a 360, make sure it's brand new, or made very recently.

Next is the issue of backwards compatibility. PS3? you can pretty much forget about playing PS2 games on it, with the new PS3 slim coming in Sept. it won't have it at all. The 360 is supposed to be able to play XBox games, but I don't have any myself so I can't verify this. The Wii will play Gamecube games no problem.

I don't know about the region encoding for all of them, but the Japanese Wii will only play Japanese games. The Japanese 360 will play games only made in the Asian region, so you can also play games from Singapore. I don't know about the PS3. Since most games for the 360 get released later in Japan, I usually go and buy the Singapore or Hong Kong releases from an import shop in Akihabara (forgot the name). The prices are cheaper than the Japanese games, and you also get the games in English.

I'm not going to tell you which of the 3 to buy, that should be your decision based on your wishes of online gaming, family friendly, and Blu-ray movies.
>7 However, with the ease of online gaming for the 360 & PS3, you also get all the A'holes, racists, sexists, bigots....etc. It's easy to mute them, but they can just as easily send you hate messages.

that is really true and with those disgusting idiots out there online I'm not going to extend my gold membership, just seems stupid to waste almost 5,000 yen to see and hear rude idiots cussing you out.
Online gaming is the key factor of the console, but I'm pretty much satisfied with silver membership. It's just that I'm not going to get games emphasizing on online... not my preference anyway. Single play is not as boring as the gamers point out.

Some American games (import) are compatible for Japanese console as well... but only a few I'd say.
As tensaibaka mentioned, the Red Ring of Death is not that much of a problem anymore. But actually, my friend bought one of the old Xbox 360s, used from someone online. It did have the red ring of death about a month later, but it worked fine the next time he turned the console on, and it has not given him a single problem since (it's been maybe a year or two); it has not frozen during online play, it has not crashed, and the Red Ring of Death has not reappeared.

Since your profile mentions you are in Japan however, maybe a PS3 would be better for you for online play (even though IMO the Xbox has better games). Idk how much the PS3 is in Japan right now, but they just dropped the US price of the 80GB to $300, which is much cheaper than what it originally debuted at. Hopefully it drops a little bit more so that I can afford one too, lol.
Maybe this is a good place to ask. I heard a rumor that the next generation
of PSP is not going to accept UMDs. If so how do you buy games for it?
Are they going with a download model. That would seriously suck....unless the
games were 1/2 the price.
Ian: You heard correctly. THe PSP Go will not accept UMDs, you will have to download games from the PSP Network. However, supposedly the PSP Go will not REPLACE the current PSP 3000, but will be an alternative option (presumably for people who would rather download and not have to carry all the games all the time; or people who can't always make it out to the store to buy a game when it is released). So if you have a current model of the PSP, you should be fine.

Unless they lied.
Just read this announcement from Microsoft that they are cutting the price of the XBox360 Elite in Japan down to 29,800JPY.
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Microsoft-cuts-Japan-price-apf-1439981315.html?x=0&.v=2

This price matches Sony's price drop for the new slim PS3 model of 29,800JPY.
I have a Wii, and am actually a little tired of it. Shaking the contoller gets old. My favorite system is still PS2. Haven't splurged for the three yet. Then again, I like mostly fighting games.

Wii is fun as a social console though. The games aren't too involved, and it's entertaining when drunk.
