Diefenbach crept up last Autumn with Run Trip Fall, their mainly instrumental album which according to NME took in “everything good from the last 40 years of pop music”. This release was intended as a gentle introduction to the band, but with its undeniable charm, also won over the likes of The Guardian, Radio 1’s One World, XFM and even found praise in The Sun.
The new album, Set And Drift (recorded in Copenhagen) sees the five Danes navigating a new direction as they introduce vocals throughout the album from their half English bassist Allan Mattsson and guitarist Kenneth Sarup. Continuing on the strength of last single Make Your Mind which was also awash with vocal harmonies, the new material moves further away from Diefenbach’s post rock beginnings and heads into full blown song writing territory inspired by artists such as Tom Petty and Neil Young.
Diefenbach claim they would have “just become bored” if they’d tried to make another instrumental album like RTF. In fact, on a recent live tour with Mylo, Diefenbach’s new celebrity fans, Snow Patrol told the band backstage that they were “idiots” for not using their voices more on the last album and Gary Lightbody admitted he had never seen a warm up band “blow the roof off” like Diefenbach did at Glasgow’s QMU.
Allan, Kenneth, Lasse, Nicolai and Stefan prove with Set And Drift that they are not really the ‘New Beta Band’ as many hinted they could be. Besides the fact that only Allan has even heard of them before, Diefenbach drench their music in melody to a far greater extent than the Betas ever did. Set And Drift’s engineer, Tom Elmhirst (who has worked with some of the biggest names in pop) said the thing that most impressed him about Diefenbach was how much they brought melody into the music compared to almost everything else in the charts right now based on rhythm.
Even with their new accessible sound, Diefenbach manage to retain all the emotion and sensitivity of their last album. By fusing a mandolin with a gentle hand clap, then explosive guitar distortion, heavy rock drums, acid synth effects, an unexpected house beat and carefully placed piano, you never know which direction they will take you next. If you let them, the mood and melody of Diefenbach can stay with you long after you’ve stopped listening, so much so that they can leave you feeling invigorated.
Continued overleaf…
Set And Drift is an album filled with the tribulations of love whilst radiating the kind of nostalgia you might feel in a dream. There’s mystery and intrigue and heartfelt lyrics filled with both optimism and pessimism. Which is the whole point with Diefenbach – there’s always a dark side. Not only do you hear sincere purity in the lyrics, there are also moments of anger such as in Skyline; ‘Crossing all the wires, in your radio; When the speaker bites you, you will know.’
The first single to be taken from Diefenbach’s new album will be Favourite Friend to be released on 30 May. The album Set And Drift will follow on 13 June.
Diefenbach will be touring Europe live in May/June. Diefenbach will also be appearing at major festivals in the UK and Europe this summer.
Bonus Bits
* Diefenbach recently made a male journalist cry at one of their live shows in Hamburg (he cried in a
good way of course..)
* Glorious took the longest time getting right in the studio. The band even recorded the song at twice
the speed and then decided to go back to the original idea.
* The Police was inspired by a news story Allan heard on the radio about immigrants being dealt a
hard time.
* Who Is The Right One and It’s Only Love were conceived within 2 days of each other and so the
band describe them as “twin songs”.
* Diefenbach turned down a gig at Glastonbury last year (sort of) so that they could concentrate on
finishing their new album.
* ‘Working out the harmonies’ is the band’s favourite element of writing a new song.
* Streetlights was inspired by Phil Spector’s Baby Love and the distinctive drum sound of the
60’s and 70’s.
