1. Science Policy Analyst, National Human Genome Research Institute

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) Policy and Program Analysis Branch seeks a Genomics Science Policy Analyst (on a contract basis) to assist in policy development. We seek a highly motivated and creative individual who can help the NHGRI develop proactive public policies that facilitate genomic science. Some of the issues the office is currently involved in include: regulation of genetic testing and direct to consumer marketing of such tests, intellectual property, and personalized medicine. This position would also assist with administrative duties, including: serving as a liaison to committees internal and external to the NHGRI, preparing authoritative reports, and maintaining branch website content. This position would also track scientific research related to the mission of the NHGRI and analyze or report on progress and findings. Candidates should have an undergraduate or graduate degree with a major in a field related to genomic or related health sciences, bioethics, or public policy. They should have at least two years specialized experience related to genetics, public policy, or health policy. They should also have the ability to translate scientific, health, and social policy issues for non-scientific audiences.

2. Public Affairs Coordinator, The American Geophysical Union

The American Geophysical Union (AGU), a world-wide scientific society comprised of over 50,000 members, is seeking a Public Affairs Coordinator. AGU is an important source of scientific information for both its members and policy makers. In this role you will attend congressional hearings, prepare hearing testimony, arrange briefings, assist with press conferences, and communicate with members via Eos, the Internet, and other venues. You will develop and analyze member and volunteer satisfaction surveys, update and maintain the public affairs section of AGU’s website, and prepare and monitor program budgets. Requirements include a Bachelors degree, ability to work independently as part of a broader team effort, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills. International experience is a plus. JOB DESCRIPTION: Provide support and assistance to the NIH Office of Extramural Programs (OEP) process for ensuring Human Subjects Protections in Extramural Projects (This is a contractor position located in the NIH Office of Extramural Research).
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
_ Electronic organization of files, scanning of documents, and linking different databases
_ Monitoring and establishing quality control measures for NIH processes for ensuring human subjects protections in extramural projects
_ Assisting in ensuring completeness of information submitted to the Office of Extramural Programs for evaluation
_ Data collection (including entry and filing) and analysis, which involves assessing proposed research in terms of science and ethics: preparing summary reports and analysis, as needed.
_ Becoming familiar with regulations, policies, and guidance that specify informational requirements for applicants
_ Evaluating and resolving human subjects concerns associated with biomedical and behavioral research studies
_ Drafting correspondence, summaries, and reports; assembling background information for meetings and presentations; participating in oral and written follow-up of unresolved issues with NIH staff; giving oral presentations in NIH meetings on data analyses

REQUIRED SKILLS, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
_ Familiarity with Federal regulations to protect Human Subjects from Research Risks (45 CFR 46)
_ Computer Literacy, including skills with word processing, spreadsheets, and familiarity with database software
_ Ability to prioritize tasks, organize information, and meet deadlines
_ Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
_ Requires general knowledge of scientific and ethical issues and knowledge of environments in which clinical research is conducted
_ At least 2 years experience in a public health field, preferably experience with human subjects
_ B.A., B.S., or M.S. and experience in a field of biomedical or behavioral science, and/or Bioethics/Research Ethics education and experience


 

4. Senior Policy Analyst

Summary
The Center for American Progress has an immediate opening for a senior policy analyst with experience in energy and environmental policy with a focus on renewable energy. The senior policy analyst will work on a long-term project to formulate policies for building renewable energy transmission corridors and a national smart grid. This is part of the energy team?s core work of promoting a broader clean energy infrastructure investment agenda, including clean technology manufacturing and end-use energy efficiency.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Conduct and support original research and analysis on issues relating to transmission lines, smart grids, and renewable energy
Develop, implement, and manage the production and distribution of policy portfolio and products
Collaborate with the Energy Policy and manage and supervise other team members as necessary
Coordination and plan meetings and events
Draft policy reports, short policy columns, and articles
Maintain expertise in assigned areas of responsibility
Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements:
Strong quantitative and analytical skills
Excellent writing, research, and verbal communication skills
Ability to work well within a team in a fast-paced environment
Comfort working under pressure and tight deadlines
Ability to multi-task
Proven ability to manage consultative process, and effective supervisory skills and ability to manage and mentor staff

Qualifications:
Advanced degree in energy and/or environmental studies preferred

Overview:
STPI is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) run by the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) that serves the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and the Executive agencies. Recent activities at STPI have been in areas including (but not limited to) biomedical research, international health, energy and the environment, space and aeronautics, education, and innovation/competitiveness.


Responsibilities:
The STPI Energy Policy Group is seeking candidates who have demonstrated experience in energy technology, policy analysis, or energy economics. We are seeking candidates for both full and part-time positions at the pre- and post-bachelors level.


Qualifications:
- Applicants must be enrolled in a local accredited educational institution, working on a BS/BA or be graduated from such a program and working on an MS/MA.
- The field of study does not matter, but applicants must be detail oriented with strong problem solving and analytical skills as well as strong speaking and writing skills.
- All applicants must have demonstrated experience one of the following: energy technology, energy economics or a related policy analysis area.
- Applicants must have the ability to interact effectively with personnel involved in policy, technical, operational and program management work.
- Applicants must be self directed and able to work independently in a tem collaborative enviromnment.
- We ask that all applicants be available to start immediately in the fall semester.
- We seek applicants who are available to work full time as well as applicants who prefer to work part time for the equivalent of at least 2 days per week.
